Vodafone’s new plans for prepaid plan to get personal with a user-defined mix of quota between calls, texts and data.

There’s a dizzying array of prepaid plans in the marketplace, which can easily get confusing. Vodafone’s latest offer is, according to the company, designed to remove that confusion by allowing customers to build their own prepaid plans under the "MyMix" banner.

Vodafone Australia's chief marketing officer Loo Fun Chee said that the current prepaid market was "an environment that’s quite complex and confusing for customers", hence the changes.

She highlighted Vodafone’s network guarantee, which allows contract customers to trial Vodafone services for 30 days and then drop the contract (as long as that month is paid for and any handset is returned) with no fuss, as well as Vodafone’s switch to $0 roaming for New Zealand, which it announced earlier in the year.

The plans will allow users to select call, text, data and international calling inclusions. The baseline service costs $8 for 120 minutes of calls within Australia, infinite standard texts and 500MB of data with a 7-day expiry. As you step up in terms of expiry and inclusions the plan prices will rise, but the idea is that if you don’t want or need, say, international calls, they’re not bolted into your price.

Vodafone will also sweeten the pot for any customer opting for a MyMix deal with more than 2GB of data before 31 April, with 1.5GB additional data at the 2GB level (3.5GB total), 4GB bonus data on a 5GB inclusion (9GB total) and 4GB bonus on an 8GB recharge (12GB total). The top level recharge would cost you $110, with a straight 8GB of data (plus the current 4GB bonus), unlimited national calls and texts and 300 minutes of international calling included with 90 days of expiry. All up, there are 72 different combinations possible with Vodafone MyMix.

In comparative terms, the closest obvious comparative service would be Yomojo’s prepaid offerings, which create the same kind of bundles.

Vodafone indicated that the MyMix plans are intended to be a new offering in their prepaid space, with all other existing prepaid plans also continuing to be sold, so if you're happy with your current prepaid deal you're not obliged to switch.
