Vodafone has overhauled its postpaid plans for more flexibility

No more lock-in contracts just to get a new phone.

After changing the expiry length of its prepaid plans earlier in the year and expanding its $5 a day global roaming to eight more countries, Vodafone has now taken aim at its postpaid plans. As of today, Vodafone will no longer lock customers into a 24-month contract in order to get a new phone.

Instead, all of Vodafone's Red plans are available as either month-to-month or 12-month plans. If a customer decides to sign up for a 12-month SIM-only contract, Vodafone will drastically increase the inclusions, from the amount of data to international calling inclusions, from phone insurance to optional mobile accessories.

But it's when customers decide to add a new phone to their plan that things get interesting. Instead of being locked into a 24-month contract, Vodafone instead separates the plan and the handset repayment, with customers able to pay off the phone in 36, 24 or 12-month instalments, or purchase the device outright from Vodafone. The plan will only be available as a month-to-month option, with similar inclusions to the 12-month SIM only plans.

This means that Vodafone customers can switch telcos at any point, even if they still have a handset repayment owing to Vodafone, with no cost to break contract, though there will be an $8 fee for porting a postpaid number to another network, and all remaining phone repayments will appear on the next bill.

In order to compete with the other mobile telcos, which reduce the handset repayments for phones as you choose higher plans, Vodafone will also discount the plan repayment based on the device you choose and the length of your interest-free phone repayment plan.

Vodafone also plans to enhance the new Red plans pricing model over the coming weeks and months with additional features and offers. In the meantime, you can compare the new offerings below.
