Vivid Sydney 2019: Circular Quay’s colourful displays revealed
From fan favourites like Customs House and the MCA to the new interactive Electric Playgound, here's where to go this year.
With less than 24 hours to go until the lights officially turn on, Vivid Sydney has finally revealed the brilliant Circular Quay displays.
Illuminated on Customs House (top tip – best seen from the platform of Circular Quay station), Under the Harbour is certainly the precinct's highlight display. Stranger Things meets Sydney Harbour in the hypnotic animation, featuring whales, jellyfish, turtles and more sea creatures swimming across the surface of the building in a kaleidoscope of colour.
Tucked between the 174-year-old building and the McDonalds, we found the turtle featured at last year's Lights for the Wild at Taronga Zoo.
Moving toward the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Samsung Electric Playground has set up shop in First Fleet Park. It features a field of 320 light poles that change colour to both music and from interaction with the Samsung phones connected to select pillars, hop scotch on an illuminated floor, the infinity slide and a bunch of technicolour hula hoops beckoning to be played with.
Inside the museum, the Samsung Galaxy Studio also features immersive, phone-powered displays personalised to the colours of your eyes and your heartbeat measured by Galaxy S10 phones.
The 2019 MCA Vivid Display is an emotional homage created by Australian-Colombian artist Claudia Nicholson that's the polar opposite to what's showing on Customs House, but worth seeing nonetheless. Filled with roses, butterflies and overlaid text, the animation is set to the sounds of Adelaide's Lonelyspeck.
You can see the Vivid Sydney displays at Circular Quay and other precincts from 24 May until 15 June from 6pm until 11pm.
