Virgin Mobile adds extra data for Guvera listeners

Angus Kidman 8 October 2015

Virgin Mobile adds extra data for Guvera listenersContract customers can score 1GB each month if they listen to the Spotify rival.

In one of the more unusual "bonus data" offers we've seen, Virgin Mobile is offering new and existing customers on its 24-month contract plans an additional 1GB of data each month if they use streaming music service Guvera.

While Virgin Mobile is presenting this as an opportunity to use the extra data to listen to tunes on the go, there's no actual restriction on how you use the extra megabytes. To take advantage of the offer, you need to register your number on Guvera's Virgin Mobile page and then listen to a track on Guvera on your phone using mobile data (not Wi-Fi).

The first time that happens each calendar month, you'll be credited with 1GB of bonus data, though this may take up to 48 hours to appear on your account. The deal runs through until 30 April 2016, and doesn't apply to prepaid plans.

Guvera offers free streaming, though if you want to play specific tracks, download for offline listening or avoid ads, you'll need a paid account.

Virgin has also extended its offer of bonus for new contract customers. Previously due to expire yesterday (7 October), it's now running through until 8 November 2015, and will run for the life of the contract for anyone who signs up during that time. Note that this doesn't apply if you're moving from a network that uses Optus (a list that includes amaysim, Vaya, TPG and iiNet, as well as Optus itself). However, you can score the extra data if you upgrade from a cheaper Virgin Mobile plan and sign up for a 24-month contract. (Virgin Mobile is owned by Optus and uses its 4G network.)

In case all that wasn't confusing enough, you can also score an additional 1GB of data on your plan each month for the life of your contract if you sign up for Virgin Mobile online rather than in store. That offer isn't restricted based on the network you shift on, and also runs through until 8 November 2015.

What does that mean in practical terms? Here's the amount of data you'll score on each of Virgin Mobile's current contract plans, depending on how many of those conditions you match.

Remember, the extra Guvera data only runs until the end of April 2016, but the rest of the data is fixed for the life of the contract.

One other thing: Virgin Mobile has dumped its previous $50 and $70 a month contract plans. However, if you're on those plans, you're still eligible for the Guvera "bonus" data.
