Virgin Mobile adds hefty $130 plan
Virgin Mobile’s top tier plan tips the scales with 21GB of data if you upgrade or switch.
There is a new high watermark for mobile data on a plan in Australia, with Virgin releasing a $130 contract phone plan that can offer up to 21GB of data to use per month.
As you’d expect, for $130 you get unlimited national calls and texts, as well as a $300 credit towards international calls, but it’s the data provision that particularly makes this plan stand out.
The basic plan provision is only 15GB, smaller than the similarly priced plans available from Optus or Vodafone that launched just prior to the release of the iPhone 6s. However if you upgrade your plan, opt for a new number or switch from any other network, Virgin Mobile will sweeten the deal with an additional 6GB of data for a total of 21GB per month, more than any other Australian carrier at the time of writing. (That deal runs until November.)
You could take that even further if you’re a user of music streaming service Guvera, as Virgin Mobile offers customers of that service a further bonus 1GB of data if you listen to at least one Guvera song per month.
So how do the top-tier plans from Virgin Mobile, Vodafone, Optus and Telstra now compare?
|Provider||Plan Name||Monthly Cost||Standard National Calls||Texts||Data||Minimum 24 month cost|
|Virgin Mobile||$130 Plan||$130||Unlimited||Unlimited||15GB/21GB||$3,120|
|Optus||MyPlan Plus $135||$135||Unlimited||Unlimited||15GB/20GB||$3,240|
Virgin Mobile's $130 plans are only available for contract customers taking up a mobile handset as part of a 24 month contract. Selected handsets still attract a small monthly charge on top of the $130 base price, however. The 128GB Apple iPhone 6 Plus will cost you $4 extra per month, as will the 128GB Apple iPhone 6S, the 64GB Apple iPhone 6S Plus and the 128GB Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge handset. If you're after a 128GB iPhone 6S Plus, it will cost you an additional $10 per month. Every other handset Virgin Mobile will offer on the plan attracts no additional handset fee.
