When it comes to flight prices between the two airlines things can get a little grey as Virgin Australia and Delta are codeshare partners, so it's likely you'll uncover the same flights and prices on certain routes, particularly those to the US, Canada and Mexico.
For the purposes of a pure price comparison, we chose destinations outside of their codeshare network to compare.
In a like-for-like comparison Virgin Australia wins by a mile sporting fares thousands less than Delta. With Virgin’s home base in Australia it’s where most of its flights depart, whereas Delta's is in the US with the airline offering fewer flights out of Australia.
Prices may change when the tables are turned and you're searching for flights from or internationally throughout the US.
Is it a good airline to fly with?
Skytrax lists Virgin Australia as a 4-star airline and Delta as a 3-star airline. Delta scores 3.5-stars for all its cabin classes across both short and long haul flights, while Virgin Australia scores 4-stars for all flight types.
Based on customer feedback on Airlinequality.com, Virgin Australia scores 6/10, once again beating Delta, which scores 5/10.
Interestingly, despite their different overall ratings, both airlines are given a mean score of 3-stars for food and beverages, staff service, seat comfort, value for money and in-flight entertainment. This suggests that the differences between the two airlines are more subtle, or perhaps more subjective.
Virgin Australia and Delta are both good airlines to fly with, but don’t expect luxury. Statistically, Virgin Australia is a slightly better airline.
Any other differences worth noting?
Delta offers a premiere cabin class called Delta One on long-haul and select domestic flights. It features flat-bed seats which can be adjusted from fully-upright to horizontal positions, a dedicated in-cabin flight attendant, private suites on select international flights, priority check-in, premium boarding, airport club access and more.
What are the deals like?
Every Thursday from 4pm-11pm, Virgin Australia runs a Happy Hour with deals on flights. This is in addition to regular flight and holiday sales. Domestic flights can drop as low as $62 while international flights generally start from $239 to Asia and the South Pacific.
Delta deals cover a range of destinations, but none currently operate to or from Australia. Flights, inclusive holidays and partner deals are all available.
For Australians, it's a no-brainer as Virgin is an Aussie carrier dedicated to deals and flights from our nation. On the opposite side of the scale, Delta is US-based, offering the best deals for its home country rather than Australians.
