When does Virgin Australia have sales?

  • Happy Hour Thursday: On Thursdays between 4pm and 11pm, Virgin Australia hosts a happy hour sales event of discounted flights.
  • #MatesRates: While there's no set date for a MatesRates sale, they occur often enough. Keep an eye out and ping your mates when you see a sale go out.
  • Book Early: Like #MatesRates, there's no regular schedule for Virgin's Book Early offers, but they're almost always available on the airline's website. You can score a great deal on a flight if you're able to book a few months in advance.

While they're not regularly occurring or guaranteed to happen annually, Virgin Australia has been known to host sales during Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Boxing Day and more.

Do I earn Velocity points for Virgin sale fares?

Virgin Australia sale fares do earn points, but with a twist. For domestic, trans-Tasman and Pacific Virgin Australia flights, the number of Velocity Points you earn is based on the cost of the ticket. For every $1 you spend, you get 5 Velocity Points.

So the cheaper the ticket, the fewer points you'll earn. That means that sale fares will earn points, but always at lower rates than regular fares.

There's a second twist to be aware of. Silver, gold and platinum members score a points bonus on ticket purchases, increasing the number of Velocity Points they get. However, the bonus does not apply to domestic "Getaway" fares, and those are usually the ones included in a sale. So be aware that if you're in one of those tiers, your sale ticket will most likely only earn the regular 5 Velocity Points per $1 spent.

The Status Credit rules are different again and based on distance, but the underlying principle is the same: you'll earn Status Credits for sale fares in Getaway class but at a lower level than on more expensive fares.

For long-haul international routes (which currently just means Los Angeles and Hong Kong) and for codeshare flights operated by Virgin Australia partners such as Etihad and Delta your points are based on the fare class and the distance travelled.

Typically, sale fares fall into the Getaway Class and that means you'll earn 0.5 Velocity Points per mile travelled. The earn rate is the same for Elevate (regular Economy). However, it's half of the Freedom Economy Earn rate, which is 1 Velocity Point per mile.

On Premium and Business Saver fares, the earn rate remains equal to regular tickets, so there's no disadvantage at all to sale fares in those cases.

As with Qantas, all this might not make a difference to your purchase decision. If you're saving $60 on a fare, that's the equivalent of 3,000 Velocity Points. In that case, the sale fare is better value than the points earned. So always do the sums carefully before making a points-based decision about a sale ticket.

What are the Virgin Australia free baggage allowances?

  • Economy (Getaway, Elevate, Freedom fare) passengers are allowed to bring aboard 23kg of checked baggage for no additional fee on top of their ticket price. Silver and gold Velocity members can bring 2 bags up to 23kg each and platinum members can bring 3 bags up to 23kg each.
  • Premium (Premium Saver and Premium fare) passengers are allowed to bring aboard 2 bags up to 23kg each. This limit remains the same for silver and gold Velocity members. Platinum members can bring 3 bags up to 23kg each.
  • Business (Business Saver and Business fare) passengers are allowed to bring 2 bags up to 32kg each. The limit remains the same for silver and gold Velocity members. Platinum members can bring 3 bags up to 32kg each.

No checked baggage is included with Go fares. No bag in any class can be more than 32kg each.

What are the Virgin Australia excess baggage fees?

Most Virgin Australia fares include baggage, but do limit the number of pieces to 1 or 2. For domestic flights, the first additional piece of luggage is $70, the second piece is $90 and the third to ninth piece is $150 each. If any piece is overweight, there is an additional charge of $70 per overweight bag.

For international short-haul flights departing Australia, the first piece of luggage is $120, the second piece is $200 and the third to ninth piece is $250 each. If any piece of overweight, there is an additional charge of $120 per overweight bag. For international long-haul flights to the Americas, the fee departing Australia is $150 per additional bag with an additional charge of $100 per overweight bag.

For flights departing the Americas, it's US$150 per additional bag with an additional charge of US$100 per overweight bag. For long-haul flights to other international destinations, excess baggage fees are calculated per kilogram and range from $30–$70 per kilogram.

What are the different Virgin Australia fare types?

Virgin Australia has 9 different options for domestic flight and international short-haul flight bookings. Here's a breakdown of what you can expect with each:

How do I book Virgin Australia holidays?

You can book a holiday through Virgin Australia the same way you book a flight. Simply enter your departure place and destination, numbers of guests and travel dates and click "Search" to browse through the options.

What is Virgin Australia's cancellation and refunds policy?

All bookings can be cancelled. However, not all are refundable. You may be charged fees to cancel and/or make changes to your flight depending on your ticket class (Saver Lite, Saver, Flexi, Business). Detailed information about the fare rules of your particular flight can be found on your itinerary and on the Virgin Australia website.

What is Virgin Australia's flexible fares policy?

Introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, Virgin Australia has put a flexible flying policy in place for flights booked up to 31 January 2022. Some of its benefits include:

  • Unlimited changes with a waived change fee
  • The option to cancel your booking and convert it to credit with no extra fees

Keep in mind that if you do change the date of your fare or opt to credit, you will be required to pay the fare difference if the price is higher on your new travel dates.

When do I have to use my Virgin Australia travel credit by?

If you have a travel credit issued by Virgin Australia during 2020, you need to do the following:

  • Make a booking using that credit by 31 July 2022
  • The booking will need to be for travel by 30 June 2023

Both those dates are obviously a long way away. Airlines don't allow bookings for more than 12 months in advance. Given that international travel is effectively blocked in Australia right now and domestic routes are heavily reduced, having time to spend credits is definitely good news.

A Virgin Australia spokesperson told Finder that further details on how to use these credits will be announced by September 2020.

Travel credits issued earlier in 2020 may have specified a different date for making and redeeming bookings. However, the dates listed here will apply to all travel credits issued during the administration period.

If you received a travel credit after 21 April 2020, currently the only way to redeem that is by contacting Virgin by phone. Online redemption is planned for later in 2020 when the full "Future Flight credits" system is rolled out.

Earlier travel credits issued to a Virgin Australia Travel bank can be redeemed on the Virgin Australia site. Just make a booking in the usual way then select Travel Bank as the payment method.
