Vertcoin is a Litecoin fork designed to be a truly decentralised cryptocurrency. Its main goals are to be resistant to application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) mining and to be profitable when mining with a regular GPU. As ASIC mining took over Bitcoin, many people felt that it was no longer a decentralised currency due to the uneven distribution of mining rewards. ASIC-resistant cryptocurrencies like Vertcoin are meant to be more egalitarian, so anyone can profitably mine them on their home computer.
Vertcoin is specifically designed to be decentralised, with mining kept in the hands of its users rather than mining conglomerates. It does this with an ASIC-resistant design that employs a constantly updating algorithm. The algorithm also gives an extra edge to GPU mining in order to actively incentivise users to mine with commercially available video cards.
Beyond its unique algorithm, Vertcoin is very much like Litecoin. It prioritises safe and secure transactions with a max supply of 84 million VTC and a 2.5-minute block-creation time.
