Velocity launches new Global Wallet app for Apple Watch
Savvy travellers can convert currency, check balances and manage their travel money on the go with the new app.
You can now manage your Velocity Global Wallet on the go with your Apple Watch! Created with Rev Worldwide (who also built Velocity’s iOS smartphone app), the app is designed with a bunch of features to help cardholders manage their travel money on the go.
The Apple Watch app uses smart geolocation to display the cardholder's balance in the local currency first, helping users track their appropriate wallets wherever they are. Users can also click to other wallet balances at any time, which can make it easier if you want to see how much money you have left in individual currencies.
The app also offers a currency calculator. If you want to know the value of a purchase in Australian dollars (or another currency) before you pay, you can enter any amount and the calculator will convert the figure into any one of the 11 supported currencies available on the account. This will make it easier to understand the monetary value of an item before you commit to the transaction.
You can also check the last 20 transactions made on the account via the app and receive alerts directly on the watch after each transaction. Not only will that make it easier to stay on top of your travel budget, but it’s also an easy way to keep an eye out for any suspicious transactions.
If your card is lost or stolen, you can also use the app to block and unblock your Global Wallet account at any time. This means you can avoid waiting in long queues to connect with customer service, keeping your card’s security to the power of your wrist.
While the new Apple Watch app offers a bunch of features to make managing your travel budget easier, you might want to download the app on your Smartphone as well. This is because you can’t use the Apple Watch app to top up your account or move money between currency wallets on your Visa prepaid card. Plus, you might want to check your smartphone Global Wallet app if you want to see more than your last 20 transactions.
As well as their account balances, you can also use the smartphone app to keep track of your Velocity Frequent Flyer Points balance. When you spend with your Velocity Global Wallet, you can earn 2 Velocity Points per $1 spent on international purchases, so you can check exactly how rewarding your travel spending is on the go.
Despite its limitations, Velocity's latest fintech innovation is another way it aims to make spending overseas (and earning points for every dollar you spend!) easier for its frequent flyers.
"Velocity is continually looking at ways to deliver a more frictionless experience for our members,” said Velocity Frequent Flyer CEO Karl Schuster. "Offering the Global Wallet Apple Watch App allows for more flexibility and convenience when our members are travelling the world.”
If you haven’t already, you can download the Velocity Global Wallet app for free from the app store.
At this point, Velocity Global Wallet cardholders can only take advantage of the smartwatch app on their Apple Watch. So fingers crossed Velocity and Rev have an Android version in the works to appeal to even more frequent flyers.
