Vaya focuses SIM-only data plans on Pokémon GO players

Vaya’s latest plan changes give you more data to go chase Pikachu with.
The Pokémon GO craze shows no signs of abating, with plenty of businesses latching onto the public’s desire to catch tiny imaginary creatures via AR. We’ve seen a growth in interest in battery packs to keep your smartphone going while out and about, but that’s only half the access story. The other thing you’ll need to catch them all is a reliable data connection to contact Niantic’s heavily hammered servers.
That’s the pitch that Vaya’s put on its new 12-month data SIM plans, as well as Vaya's existing month-to-month plans, which have today sliced $5 off their monthly price. You don’t have to use the data for Pokémon GO, and Vaya has no particular hookup with Niantic or Nintendo to speak of, but like cafes leaving lures or vendors selling battery packs, they’re keen to get in on the action.
The 12-month and month-to-month plans have adjusted data value upwards, with the key benefit of an annual contract being the overall monthly price dropping downwards. There’s also a new month-to-month only "Monster" tier with 30GB of data for $65 per month. All plans use the almost-standard $10/GB excess pricing model. Here’s how the new Vaya plan pricing looks:
DATA ONLY PLANS | Data SIM S | Data SIM M | Data SIM L | Monster (new) |
---|---|---|---|---|
Month-to-month price | $10 | $25 | $45 | $65 |
12-month price | $108 ($9 per month) | $264 ($22/month) | $480 ($40/month) | N/A |
Data | 1.5GB (previously 2GB) | 5GB (previously 4GB) | 15GB (previously 7GB) | 30GB |
