Fast-paced combat takes centre stage in this spin-off of the much-beloved tactics game Valkyria Chronicles.
The 2008 release of Valkyria Chronicles on PS3 didn't exactly take the world by storm. Outside of Japan, the game garnered only a small--albeit passionate--fan base captivated by its unique blend of traditional turn-based strategy with real-time action. That might have been that, had Sega not decided to remaster the game for PC in 2014. PC players fell hard for Chronicles, with nearly a million copies sold on Steam to this day.

Thanks to this success, Valkyria Chronicles is getting its first full-scale follow-up in the form of Valkyria Revolution for PS4 and Xbox One. Revolution isn't a direct sequel to Chronicles, though--that game already came out for the ill-fated PSP back in 2010. Instead, Revolution keeps the gorgeous painterly art style of Chronicles while ditching the turn-based combat for a more action-heavy approach, drawing inspiration from games like Bayonetta and Dynasty Warriors.
That doesn't mean Valkyria's trademark tactics have been completely lost, however. You can still pause the action at any time to give orders to your teammates, cast spells and activate special abilities, and plot out your advance to make strategic use of cover. You'll also need to manage your troops' morale from battle to battle, as they won't take too kindly to being sent in as cannon fodder and will abandon you completely if you push them too hard.
It might not be the traditional sequel some fans were hoping for, but Valkyria Revolution has certainly piqued our interest. If it's caught your eye, too, then you've come to the right place. We've tracked down the best deals on Valkyria Revolution in advance of its June 30 release, and they're right here:
