Original article follows:

Backwards compatibility will allow Xbox 360 games to work on an Xbox One console and to use new features of the Xbox One such as Game DVR, Snap, Twitch streaming and screenshots grabbing. All your previous save files, DLC add-ons and achievements will carry across, and if you are playing an Xbox 360 game on your Xbox One, you will still be able to cross-play with friends using an Xbox 360. All future games released on the Xbox 360, and any games provided for the Xbox 360 for free through the Gold Live service, will all be backwards compatible by default, too. It's pretty tidy. You find our most wanted games for backwards compatibility here.

Sadly, not all Xbox 360 games will be able to take advantage of the feature as there is some investment and development required to getting an Xbox 360 game working on the Xbox One architecture. It is expected that over time, three or four hundred of the biggest titles from the previous Xbox generation will be integrated into the program, but at launch we can expect around 100. What will they be? Is your library of available Xbox One games set to leap by one or two, or many more?   xbox-one-backwards-compatibility-will-include-dlc-publishers-will-decide-485087-2

Very slowly the list of compatible titles is starting to emerge and we will continually update this list as each title is revealed. Microsoft has informed us as of Gamescom “all future Xbox 360 Games with Gold titles will be playable on Xbox One,” and it’s believed that upcoming games available for Xbox 360, will also be backwards compatible out of the box. Bookmark the page and come back regularly to see if your favourite game has been selected, so it can move from your pile of shame to its rightful place in an Xbox disc drive.

This list is wrong. Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 1, 2, and Future soldier are NOT backwards compatible. After reading this, I ran out and bought all 3 again, to come home and have my X1 tell me that they are NOT backwards compatible. Thanks for wasting my time! I’ll think twice before trusting second party information ever again.

      Hi Bearded Eggs,

These games are scheduled to be coming to backwards compatibility, however Microsoft is only releasing games to the service in staggered, monthly batches. As a result, we do not know when they will become backwards compatible only that – from the information made publicly available by Microsoft at this time – that they will be.

As noted in the article, the list of games already backwards compatible is here – http://www.finder.com/confirmed-backwards-compatible

Apologies for the inconvenience; we’re also frustrated that Microsoft has delaying the backwards compatible software rollout.

      Cheers

      Chris

I know halo 3 is playable on xbox one via master chief collection. Will they also be releasing the original halo 3 to be playable on xbox one backwards compatibility?

    • Staff
      Chris | January 13, 2016

      Hi Trixz,

It is our belief that the original Halo 3 will come to backwards compatibility, as the box art was shown on the promotion material in the lead-up to the backwards compatibility feature being released. However, until we get official word, we cannot confirm whether this is true. As it stands, no date has been provided for Halo 3 backwards compatibility.

      Cheers

      Chris

When will dark souls 1 be back compatible

    • Staff
      Brodie | January 11, 2016

      Hi Garrett,

There’s no word yet on whether Dark Souls will be backwards compatible. Microsoft is aiming to release new backwards compatible games every month. We’ll be sure to update our list post a story each time an announcement is made.

      Thanks,
      Brodie

How about Saints row the 3rd or Cod Ghosts as of January 2016? Will they be compatible? Thanks!

    • Staff
      Brodie | January 4, 2016

      Hi Joshua,

Neither Saint’s Row: The Third or Call of Duty: Ghosts are available for backwards compatibility. Saint’s Row: The Third is in high demand, though. Hopefully, we’ll see it added in next month’s release.

      Thanks,
      Brodie

GWG 360 titles beginning in Nov of 2015 will be backwards compatible. https://twitter.com/XboxQwik/status/636239205941706752

It is not all future 360 games.

Additionally, the official list of backwards compatible games stand at 20-30, not 100+. This article is complete BS.

The good news is that the majority of major publishers are supporting BC and the list will grow to 100 when BC officially launches in Nov. Until that time I would suggest consulting the XBox website for the official list.

I would like to see where this was stated. Everything I read said that Phil Spencer has said all future Xbox 360 Games with Gold games would be backwards compatible. I have seen no one else interpret this to mean that all games released on the 360 will be backwards compatible. Show me the quote. Back up your info otherwise you are just making stuff up.

      Chris | August 20, 2015

      Hi Nathan,

You raise an interesting point about interpretation; we identified that could be an issue, so separated the games into two tables to keep the two pools distinct and will await a confirmation.

      Cheers,
      Chris
