Unbelievable hotels: Svart
Stay at one of the most environmentally friendly hotels in the world that appears to float above water in the Arctic Circle, with 360° nature views.
Hotel name: Svart
Where: Svartisen, Norway
What’s unique about this property:
Svart is unique in many ways but the feature that stands out the most is the fact that it is the world’s first hotel designed to meet the Powerhouse standard above the polar circle, which means that in 60 years or less it will generate more renewable energy than the amount of energy it took to build, operate and, if it were to happen, demolish it.
That’s an incredible achievement by Snøhetta, known for their modern and forward-thinking hotels. What’s even better is the beautiful design of the hotel in its circular extension of the Holandsfjorden shoreline.
And if that’s not enough then the views are bound to impress you. From all angles you’ll be able to experience the landscape, with the Svartisen glacier not moments away.
Still in construction, Svart is proposed to be completed by 2021.
What to do in the area:
As the hotel will sit above the water, guests shall be able to explore the hotel not just along the boardwalk but also underneath it, as they paddle their way over the water in kayaks.
Guests will be able to enjoy nature to its full extent in a unique environment by hiking across Norway’s largest glacier, Svartisen. Cycling and hiking are available on nearby paths. Other attractions include Grønligrotta Cave, one of the largest caves in the Nordic region.
Lastly, at certain times of the year guests will be able to enjoy views of the northern lights as they dance across the sky.
