UberX passenger pick-up zone to open at Sydney Airport 19 July
UberX and GoCar passengers will soon have a dedicated priority pick-up zone at Sydney Airport.
Sydney Airport has confirmed it will open a priority pick-up zone for economic ride-sharing services like UberX on 19 July. This follows a move earlier this month by Uber to allow UberX drivers to pick up passengers legally from Sydney Airport's free passenger pick-up zone.
The new priority pick-up zone will be located opposite the T2 and T3 domestic terminals and will be available to private operators such as UberX and GoCar, as well as the general public.
Unlike the free passenger pick-up zone, UberX drivers will be charged $4 per 15 minutes to wait in and pick up passengers from this priority area. Taxis at Sydney Airport currently charge a $4.10 airport rank fee to be picked up from its dedicated taxi area.
To accommodate for these changes, the current free passenger pick-up area will be relocated to the P3 undercover car park and the free pick-up time limit will be increased from 10 to 15 minutes. This will also come into effect from 19 July.
It's understood that Sydney Airport may be considering a similar priority pick-up zone for ride-sharing services in the future. At the moment, it offers a dedicated zone for premium services such as UberBLACK.
How can I avoid the $4 priority pick-up fee?
While it's yet to be confirmed who will foot the $4 priority pick-up fee, drivers and passengers can avoid paying this by using Sydney Airport's free passenger areas. These are:
The free passenger pick-up area: Currently located around a 5-minute walk outside of the domestic terminals, this will be relocated to the T3 multi-storey car park on July 19. Drivers can park here free for 15-minutes, after which they must exit and re-enter to avoid paying any fees.
The Blu Emu Car Park: Located offsite, passengers can easily access the car park from the T2 and T3 domestic terminals via a free and frequent shuttle service. Drivers can park here free for up to one-hour.
