Two-up in Sydney, Anzac Day 2018

There’s only one day of the year you can get involved in the rough and tumble, Aussie-settler, true blue world of two-up gambling and that day is Anzac Day. Here’s where to play it.

You have to love a national holiday that bends the rules to go all out Aussie. Two-up is banned for most of the year (state by state), but when Anzac Day rolls around, the true blue Aussie pubs get into the spirit and start tossing pennies.

The Potts Point Hotel, Darlinghurst

Formally The Sugarmill, Potts Point Hotel is continuing the tradition of hosting an Anzac Day celebration with the main event being those heart-pumping games of two-up. These, closely followed by the drinks specials which will be on offer throughout the day. A free arrival drink as well as 20% off meals will be available for servicemen and women who arrive in uniform.

Bungalow 8, King Street Wharf

Bungalow 8 is putting together a massive harbourside two-up arena this Anzac Day, making excellent use of their extensive beer garden. Tunes are provided by DJs playing your favourite Aussie tunes from 2pm, while service men and women will also receive 25% off their food and drink before 1pm.

The Australian Heritage Hotel, The Rocks

Does it get more Australian than 130 Aussie beers on offer? No, it does not. Select the best and try them all, when The Australian Heritage Hotel plays host to one of Sydney’s largest outdoor two-up arena while the Scots marching band will keep the celebration on tune.

The Glenmore, The Rocks

They have not one, but two BBQs to choose from: on Cumberland Street, or on the rooftop overlooking Sydney Harbour. We know which one we’ll be picking. Two-up isn’t the only Anzac themed event on the day, there will also be special performances alongside Cumberland St by the Scots marching band.

The Argyle, The Rocks

Right where the Anzac Day Parade ends is where you’ll head to have a drink afterwards. The Argyle is opening its doors early so there’s no hanging around. Two fires in the courtyard will keep you toasty and a all-out Aussie BBQ to keep your belly full.

The Rose, Chippendale

The Rose knows what's important on a day like today. It's all about two-up games and meal deals. Today the bar is offering a pizza and beer combo for $15. Drink up and play to win.

Claiming to be the best two up arena in the east, The Light Brigade will fill you up before the big game. A full menu will be available all day long.

Expect a cracker of a day at the Duck Inn Pub and Kitchen. Each year it goes hard and goes long for Anzac Day and this year is no exception with games of two-up.

Ryan’s Paragon Hotel, Circular Quay

Get into the spirit of things by heading to the Paragon's open air bar by midday. Can't wait till that late? That's OK 'cos the venue opens at 8am so you can get your digger's brekky as you hone your two up skills for when the games start at midday.

The Morrison Bar & Oyster Room, George St

Expect the usual party at The Morrisons, inclusive of drink specials, live music, BBQ and two-up. Yeah, these guys are doing Anzac Day right. The bar will be open from mid-morning so get there early.

Cargo Bar, Darling Harbour

Just up the wharf from Bungalow 8 is Cargo Bar. It’s a little bit bigger, but the views are just as spectacular. Head there in the daytime for the biggest two up arena on the Harbour, hosted by Paddy Derrig. Stay in the evening for DJ sets pumping out the beats until late.

The Star, Pyrmont

The Star is getting into the Anzac Day spirit in a big way starting from the night before. On April 24 the casino will host a Check Your Head event with CDB. On the public holiday, head to the 24/7 Sports Bar for everything you can expect from an Anzac Day and more. That's two up, some footy and some guest appearances.

It’s not just Anzac Day. No, it’s the Anzac 2Up Crafternoon, where you’ll be basking in the joy that is $6.50 a schooner craft beers by 4 Pines Brewery which can be enjoyed in a courtyard on a beautiful Wednesday morning. There will also be a comp to win a tour of the 4 Pines Brewery. Fair dinkum, mate.

The Forresters is going all out for Anzac Day. Drinks specials and DJs will be running all night and, of course, there will be that two-up toss starting from midday to get the party started.

North Shore

Harbord Diggers, Freshwater

They claim its the biggest two-up in the Southern Hemisphere and they’re probably right. The Harbord Diggers have the whole shebang going on for Anzac Day, starting with a Commemoration Service at 8am (troops are gathered at 7:30am) which is followed by a march, wreath laying ceremony and a performance by the Sydney Philharmonic VOX choir. Just in it for the two-up and the drinks? Become a member now – or find a mate who is one. Due to its popularity, Diggers will only be letting in members and one guest. But that’s okay. You can always become a member on the day.

Manly Wharf Hotel, Manly

When on the North Shore, one watering hole worth a two-up sesh is the Manly Wharf Hotel. On top of the Two Up on Jetty the hotel has planned, there will be $16 jugs of James Squire One Fifty Lashes and DJs from 5pm. Get amongst it!

Hunters Hill Hotel, Hunters Hill

The Greengate Hotel proclaims it has one of the largest two-up rings in the Upper North Shore. We'll let you be the judge of that.

The Henson, Marrickville

Long day planned and can't make it smack-bang on midday for a game of two up? No sweat. The Henson will be holding its two up games from 1pm-6pm, so you've plenty of time to tuck into their acclaimed meals before getting to the arena.

Coopers in Newtown is opening up bright and early for its traditional 7am Anzac Day party. Unlike many other bars, the toss-up starts from doors open and will be held by ringmaster "Scuffy".

Food will be available in both the upstairs and downstairs areas until 10pm. It's going to be a long one, but a good one!

Three Weeds, Rozelle

Head to the Back Bar of Three Weeds on Anzac Day to discover the atmosphere changed. The inaugural two up toss will happen at 1pm but that doesn't mean you can't tuck into one of the bar's craft beers or pub classic dishes earlier. There will also be a chance to donate a gold coin to Legacy. Score!

Start this ANZAC Day off with a few crisp ciders in the Newtown Hotel’s sunny courtyard and a few rounds of two-up. Come evening and the chilled atmosphere will be replaced by an edgier vibe, as they amp things up with an epic line up of local DJs. Couldn’t ask for more… except some luck on the day, of course.

The play of the day will run as such. 12pm: arrive at the Regent Hotel and order your meal from the bistro. 1pm: place your bets at the two-up. Two-up on Bondi Beach? Well, pretty much. If you’ve been to Bondi but haven’t been to The Bucket List, then you’ve probably walked right past it – it’s that restaurant and bar on the Pavillion. Icy cold buckets of Corona, a lamb pie (an ANZAC Day special from the chefs) and two-up in the courtyard… yeah, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Beach Road, Bondi

Beach Road always knows how to throw a good bash and Anzac Day is no exception. Two-up kicks off from 12pm till late from the upstairs grandstand arena (fancy, right?), with four bars, three extra can bars and DJs basically EVERYWHERE pumping out the tunes well into the night. Then, let's not forget the amazing food pop up stalls making an appearance upstairs. Anzac day = sorted.
