Sally McMullen
Hey chicks, I'm Sal.
Alex Hourigan
And I'm Al.
Sally McMullen
And this is Two Broke Chicks, the show that shares life lessons for the gals, from the gals. And in today's episode, Al and I are going to be sharing some of the apps that help us keep our shit together.
Alex Hourigan
Oh my God, because don't we need it?
Sally McMullen
Before we get into it, what's your life lesson of the week, Al?
Alex Hourigan
Recently, I signed up to foster caring, like rescue dogs or cats. And I wanted a dog for a really long time, but I wasn't sure if it necessarily fit into my lifestyle or I could commit to, you know, 14 years with a pet. Because animals are a really long term investment and I wanted to make sure that I was ready for that. And also foster caring is a really great way to make sure that animals that are in a shelter, find their fur-ever home. And so I fostered my beautiful baby Delilah,. She was the chunkiest, funkiest little Staffy. And by little, I mean, she was up to like, halfway near to my hip.
Sally McMullen
She thought she was a puppy though.
Alex Hourigan
She thought was a puppy. And we'll get like the negatives out of the way first, you don't really understand how much time you need to be at home with the dog. Like, you have to always be home to feed the dog, you always have to be out for a certain amount of time, you need to make sure you can go out to take them out to go to the bathroom or all that stuff. But it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. And I did fall in love with this dog. She was incredible. I'll post some pictures in the Facebook group because I, like didn't really post too much about her because I was like, I'm falling in love. And I can't adopt her because I also live in an apartment and she just needed a little backyard.
Sally McMullen
Yeah
Alex Hourigan
But she was so cuddly. I'm very, very obsessed with her. But basically my life lesson is if you're thinking about getting a dog or you want to start foster caring, do it. It is really rewarding. It is a lot easier than you think it would be. Like you do want to go home to them. You do want to take them for walks. It's a really nice life change for it. And with foster caring. It's not forever like you do help them find their homes. And you will cry. But anyway, Delilah's my baby. I miss you.
Sally McMullen
We miss you!
Alex Hourigan
Also they renamed her to Kelly like what the f*ck?
Sally McMullen
Yeah. They f*cked that.
Alex Hourigan
That was the part that broke my heart the most when she got adopted. And they changed her name from Delilah to Kelly. And I was like, why would you do that? That's my life lesson. If you want to get a dog, try foster caring, because one, you're going to help a dog find a home and get out of the shelter and find a home forever. And two, you'll learn whether or not you're ready for the commitment full time.
Sally McMullen
Yeah, it's like a good way to put the training wheels on first without the full commitment because it is a responsibility even though it is really fun.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah, like we were going out and we'd be like, "Oh, should we go out for drinks?". I'm like, "No, I've gotta go home to the dog".
Sally McMullen
Literally.
Alex Hourigan
My baby.
Sally McMullen
My baby!
Alex Hourigan
She's not my baby anymore.
Sally McMullen
Yes, she is. Always.
Alex Hourigan
I'm taking a bit of a break after that. They were like, "Do you want another dog to take home?". And I was like, "I think I need like a two week break becuase I got bit attached". Oopsy daisy, all right, what's your life lesson for me, babe?
Sally McMullen
Okay, so my life lesson of the week is I saw on Instagram a bunch of phrases that we should all be taking out of our emails to stop sounding so passive.
Alex Hourigan
Oh, you know I'm a bit of a slut for this.
Sally McMullen
So the first one is, "No worries if not", just take it out. They'll tell you if it's a worry. Number two, "Sorry to bother you". Instead, replace that with "Thanks for your time" or "Thanks in advance".
Alex Hourigan
Love
Sally McMullen
Because then you're still like respecting their time that maybe they're going out of their way. But you're not being like, "Sorry", you know, again, passive. And then the last one is, "Does that make sense?". Because you're gaslighting yourself, you know it makes sense! Instead replace that with let me know if you have any questions. Because then you're not doubting yourself, but you're still like opening up the opportunity for them to raise any questions if they don't understand. But there you go.
Alex Hourigan
J'Adore.
Sally McMullen
Easy peasy.
Alex Hourigan
J'Adore. Also, if you didn't catch our life lesson from season one, also the word "just".
Sally McMullen
Yes
Alex Hourigan
"Just" makes everything passive or minimises what you're doing. So if you're like, "Hey, I JUSTworked on Instagram today". You could have been doing 500,000 things that take a really long time, and you minimised what you were doing. Or if you're like, "Hey, I'm JUSTchecking in on that report". Just take it out. I just said it then!
We're still working on it.
Take it out! Like hey, I'm checking in on that report.
Sally McMullen
Exactly.
Alex Hourigan
Love that!
Sally McMullen
There we go.
Alex Hourigan
Gotta look out for that vocab in emails, babe.
Sally McMullen
Exactly.
Alright, now that we've got our life lessons out of the way, let's get into our top apps.
Alex Hourigan
Okay, my first one is called Park Patrol. As someone who makes it a committed relationship with parking officers and probably within a year I reckon I paid maybe $2,000 in parking fines. When I was living in like the heart of Bondi, and I was just too lazy to get a parking permit, I reckon I racked up about $2,000 in parking fines. It's like my Russian roulette. I'm like, "Will I? Won't I?". But then I discovered this app called Park Patrol, and it is a community of people like me who report parking officers. So it's really good for people. If you're at uni, or you're in a high parking office area, like Bondi, like the CBD, places like that. That it will show you if you're kind of weaning out of the time that you've been parked it or if there is a parking officer within the space. Because gorgeous, gorgeous girls do not get parking fines. I am not a gorgeous girl. But I'm trying to be.
Sally McMullen
Yeah.
Alex Hourigan
So Park Patrol. Stunning.
Sally McMullen
Love it. Is it free?
Alex Hourigan
Yeah, think so.
Sally McMullen
We'll put it in the shownotes. My first app recommendation is Open Table, which is a free app. And it's an app that you can use to book reservations at bars, restaurants and the like. And God, I wish I'd discovered it earlier. So it's really easy. Basically just pop in your location, how many people you want for the reservation and the time, and it shows you everywhere in your area, and all of the different reservations that are available. It's so much easier than opening up 1000 different apps or calling up multiple restaurants and being knocked back.
Alex Hourigan
Oh!
Sally McMullen
And it's so easy when you're travelling and you don't really know where you're going. Great way to find new restaurants. And then also, if you're just making a last minute booking.
Alex Hourigan
That's what I did for all of our bookings in Hawaii.
Sally McMullen
Yeah, made it so much easier. You can also filter by cuisine or vibe, even.
Alex Hourigan
Just make sure as well, the good thing about OpenTable is it shows you the cancellation policy for every restaurant. So it'd be like, "You need to cancel within 48 hours" or "You're going to be charged this much per head for the booking".
Sally McMullen
Yeah, great. There's also reviews in there too. So that's really helpful to like filter where you wanna go.
Alex Hourigan
I love a bit of a review.
Sally McMullen
Me too. Tell me the goss!
Alex Hourigan
Yeah, what's the juicy goss, girl? Okay, moving on.
Sally McMullen
Next one.
Alex Hourigan
Trigger warning for myself.
Sally McMullen
You have to retell the story very quickly. They need the context!
Alex Hourigan
Okay, the app that I really liked, but also have a love hate relationship with is Splitwise. When I got dumped by my ex, which was not very nice for me, was very sad. I was at home, literally crying on the couch watching Sex in the City, and got a notification from Splitwise for the $17.50 I owed for a $35 pizza that was had the night before I got dumped.
Sally McMullen
The Last Supper.
Alex Hourigan
We move on, because healing, growing, all that shit, went to therapy. But it's still a really good at Splitwise is an app that you can load groups into. So you can load in like the work colleagues, you always go out with uni friends, you always go out with your high school friends, whatever you want your boyfriend or girlfriend, weird flex. And you can type in and put in things that you pay for. So what Splitwise is really good for is roommates and households or if you're going on a holiday. Sal and I went away for New Year's, and everyone's loaded into Splitwise and you can put certain things that you buy in, so I can put in, I bought a $50 bottle of vodka. But out of the five of us three of us were going in for the vodka. So I select those three, and it will divide it by those three people. But then if Sal buys, I don't know, cheese, but it's only Sal and I having that, she can select her and me and it will calculate the difference between what other people are buying, and then tell everyone what they owe. It also sends the notifications for you. So if you have that shit friend that never pays you back for anything, you can just keep sending the notification on Splitwise.
Sally McMullen
Exactly. And you're not bugging them. And it's not awkward.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah. Because you know how as well the maths of it can take you out of just dealing with it? Like being like, "Oh, but I paid $50 for the drinks, but you paid $10 for the cheese. So then that makes it huh".
Sally McMullen
Yeah, it does all the maths for you. Quick maths!
Alex Hourigan
Yeah makes it super easy. So definitely get on that. It's really good for holidays and roommates and bing bang bong. Just don't Splitwise anyone when you dump them. Exactly.
Sally McMullen
My next app is borrowbox, which is another free app. And you can use it to borrow books, ebooks, or audiobooks via your library for free. So rather than using Amazon or your Kindle, which we both do love, you can use BorrowBox to download books for free. So all you need, if you've signed up, you've got a library card at your local library. You just use your membership number to log in, and you can get all the books and audio books you want for free.
Alex Hourigan
Gorgeous.
Sally McMullen
It's so good!
Alex Hourigan
But why would you want an audio book when you can listen to Two Broke Chicks, Sal?
Sally McMullen
Exactly, which is also free. Just saying!
Alex Hourigan
Just throwing it out there. Nah, we've got to get a our fairy smut books somehow.
Sally McMullen
Exactly.
Alex Hourigan
Or, I just started a new podcast. No. Okay, I've got so many that I want to do, but I'm going to finish on my last favourite. But it's Duolingo.
Sally McMullen
Yes!
Alex Hourigan
I love Duolingo. And if you have somehow managed to avoid this brand on the internet, allow me to elucidate here. Duolingo is an app that allows you to learn languages really quickly. It's one of the most popular apps in the entire world, the range of languages that you learn on that is incredible. I feel like we all did languages in high school and none of us know anything. I did German and all I know is, "Das ist mein Hamburger". And if you didn't catch that, "that's my hamburger".
Sally McMullen
That's all you need to know.
Alex Hourigan
Right? Whereas I started learning French, I'm still a big rookie on it. And it was just a fun thing to do at the start of my morning that wasn't immediately logging on to work. And I was really good with it for about two months, when I started in lockdown. And then I kind of fell off it when lockdown was over, and did not realise how much I learned because then maybe two months later, I was like, I want to get back into it. I couldn't remember half the stuff that I knew. And it made me realise how much I had learned in such a short period of time. If you want to learn a new language, if you're going to have your hot girl summer in Europe this year, seriously, I am not good with learning. I'm very smart. I know that. But in terms of traditional ways of learning, like in schooling and studying, I can be quite forgetful. Whereas this was one of the most interactive, easiest ways to learn a language that I've ever experienced. Also, how sexy is knowing two languages?
Sally McMullen
Exactly
Alex Hourigan
Like shoutout to people who know multiple languages. It is not easy.
Sally McMullen
Not at all. That's the good thing about Duolingo is that it does combine multiple types of learning. So there's like memory games, or verbal, or you listen, you have to repeat it back. It kind of like mixes a few different things. And I did the same thing before I went to Japan and I loved it. My last app recommendation is Co-Star and this one is for the ooky spooky girlies who want NASA level accurate horoscope.
Alex Hourigan
Girlies and boylies!
Sally McMullen
We know that girlies is an inclusive term here, we're all chicks on the podcast. But essentially co star users NASA data, and then also your horoscope details and stars and what's in the cards to tell you the most accurate horoscopes I've ever read. So Al and I used to start every morning meeting running through our Co-Stars of the day and we haven't done that in a while.
Alex Hourigan
I know
Sally McMullen
So pull out your phone.
Alex Hourigan
No!
Sally McMullen
The other thing I love about Co-Star is that you can add your friends on there. So if your friends being a bit of a bitch or she's in a sooky mood or she's loving life, check out her Co-Star and see what's going on.
Alex Hourigan
Why are those the first two?
Sally McMullen
Okay, read me what's in the stars for you today. Owl.
Alex Hourigan
Your love language is convoluted romantic games.
Sally McMullen
Mine is your love language is sex.
Alex Hourigan
And also your body is wise.
Sally McMullen
Oh, I'm into that.
Alex Hourigan
I don't know if we should trust that because my body has made some decisions for me that shouldn't.
Sally McMullen
She's led me astray. Is that like your top one? Yeah, mine is asked someone who disagrees with you.
Alex Hourigan
I don't ever disagree with you.
Sally McMullen
So I need some contradictory opinions.
Alex Hourigan
Get Jack back in. Jack from MAFS back in.
Sally McMullen
That's what the potato skins versus mash conversation was.
Alex Hourigan
It also gives you do's and don'ts. So my do today is manicures. Which if you could see my nails, that's rude. Sage and a pillow fort.
Sally McMullen
I'm into that.
Alex Hourigan
Love that and my don't is fourthwall, dropping hints and retreat.
Sally McMullen
Oh, okay. My do's are strangers, warm beverages ,cartwheels. And my don'ts are excuses, showing up late, unfollowing
Alex Hourigan
Oh, have you unfollowed anyone today?
Sally McMullen
No.
Alex Hourigan
Who was the last person you unfollowed
Sally McMullen
I don't know. I definitely have been like following that tip that we've given on the podcast before of going through and like cleaning out your following list. Probably some influencer who was making me feel bad about myself. Actually, we had the election recently and I unfollowed somebody who had like, something sassy to say about the Greens. There we go. But yeah, Co-Star, absolutely recommend, it's free and it's just fun to add your friends and compare your horoscopes for the day. So whether or not you actually follow horoscopes to a tee or you just think it's a little bit of fun, It's just a good time. Well now that we've got our apps out of the way let's get into our product recommendations of the week.
So because Al and I have a crippling shopping addiction and we are shopping journalists, in that order, we try a lot of products. This is no hashtag ad, no hashtag spon, this is just stuff that we genuinely love. So what's your product recommendation of the week, Al?
Alex Hourigan
Okay, my product recommendation is the Scarlet period undies. If you're new to period undies, they're what they sound like. You literally just put them on and freeflow. There's no leak, they have like an anti-wick moisture, which means you're not leaking about, it's not dripping down your legs. Sorry for the visual. And it is like a bit of a new thing if you're used to wearing tampons, which like, definitely, I've been like a tampon girl my whole life. But once I'm past that, like second, third day, like it's pretty light.
Sally McMullen
Yeah.
Alex Hourigan
And that is literally the perfect situation. I hate wearing a pad. So I wear them to bed. I wear them like maybe after the second day, and they have like a wide range of products. They've got G strings, they've got boy shorts, they've got swimmers, they're $32 and $36, depending on your flow. So they've got light to moderate, which equals three tampons, and then moderate to heavy which equals five tampons. And I was so skeptical before I tried them, and they are incredible. Also, they're really good for women that have just had a baby.
Sally McMullen
Yeah.
Alex Hourigan
So try it out. Sometimes it's not for everyone and that's completely fine. But I'm yet to meet someone that's tried period undies, and hasn't been like, "This is the vibe".
Sally McMullen
And I just love all the different styles that they have like little boy shorts, the high waisted, the G-string, I actually love. Get around it.
Alex Hourigan
Into it. What's yours? Tell me.
Sally McMullen
So you've got the bottom half, and I'm going to do the top half because my recommendation is the Form and Fold triangle bikini which is 160 bucks. So it is on the pricier range but if you have D-plus tig ol bitties, please get around this brand. It is made for busty women, by busty women, which Al and I both are, they cater to cup sizes D to G and they have band sizes between 30 to 38. They have all different styles of bikini tops but for so many years, I really struggled to find any bikini top that would allow me to dive under a wave without holding on to my two breasts for dear life. And they recently launched a triangle bikini which I literally thought I would just never be able to wear. I was like I'm a bandaeu girl now, that's it for me. We were lucky enough to get gifted a couple of pairs and I absolutely recommend it. I tried it on the other day, it's so flattering, nothing was falling out. They also have a test on the site, a little quiz that you can fill in your measurements, what style you like, what kind of coverage you like, and they show you exactly what type of bikini you should be buying. So it is absolutely perfect. I recommend.
Alex Hourigan
So if I wanted to buy one, Sal, is there a discount code that I could use?
Sally McMullen
Oh my God. Fancy you say that. We actually do have a cheeky little discount code.
Alex Hourigan
Not affiliate code by the way, we're just like also people are broke and it's $150 for bikini top. Can we please have a discount codes for the chicks.
Sally McMullen
Exactly so this isn't affiliate code but it is twobrokechicksgift10%.
Alex Hourigan
One more time
Sally McMullen
twobrokechicksgift10%. We will pop this in the show notes so that you can copy and paste that baby into the checkout and get yourself a rockin bikini.
Alex Hourigan
We'll put it in the Facebook group as well.
Sally McMullen
Exactly, we'll put it on Instagram, it's gonna be everywhere, you won't be able to miss it. Please try them.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah, no, they're a vibe.
Sally McMullen
Also, the quality is incredible. I bought a pair before our last trip to America, which was in 2019 and I was still rocking them this summer, worth every cent. On that note, that's another episode of Two Broke Chicks wrapped up and in the can. As always, we will chuck all of the links to all of the apps and resources that we mentioned in today's episode in the show notes. You can also head to finder.com.au/twobrokechicks for a transcript and some other resources. Chuck us a follow on Instagram and TikTok and also had to Broke Chicks Club, our private Facebook group
