Alex Hourigan
Did you know I drank so much coffee the other week that my Apple Watch gave me a heart rate alert?
Sally McMullen
Oh my god. I'm impressed. That's my girl! I've created a monster.
Alex Hourigan
Hey Chickies! I'm Al.
Sally McMullen
And I'm Sal.
Alex Hourigan
And this is Two Broke Chicks, the show sharing life lessons from the gals, for the gals.
Sally McMullen
We're back, baby.
Alex Hourigan
We're back and better than ever, but this year, surprise, we're gonna be dropping two episodes a week.
Sally McMullen
Kicking it up a notch. We're gonna have our regular full length episodes that y'all used to. But we're also introducing a new segment called 'Add to Cart'.
Alex Hourigan
Woo!
Sally McMullen
Very exciting. We're basically going to be grilling our guests on their wardrobe must haves, beauty bag essentials, and also their biggest shopping regrets, which I think is my favourite question, but it's going to be juicy. Giving you a sneak peek into their carts and wardrobes.
Alex Hourigan
No #ad no #spon. No, you guys have been asking for my skincare routine. This is just the straight up best of the best.
Sally McMullen
It's gonna be fun. Every Thursday.
Alex Hourigan
Before we jump into today's episode, though, it's been a while.
Sally McMullen
I know.
Alex Hourigan
How are you?
Sally McMullen
I'm good, bit nervy to be back on the tools.
Alex Hourigan
What do you mean though? I love that I'm asking you how have you been like I didn't spend the last like-
Sally McMullen
Literally!
Alex Hourigan
-nine days with you in a row.
Sally McMullen
Exactly. But you know, all theatrics, darling!
Alex Hourigan
Yeah, what's the goss? Well, Sal and I got COVID. That's a little update for you. We went away for New Year's. We were each other's new years kiss, obviously.
Sally McMullen
Naturally. What else?
Alex Hourigan
Sal took one for the team. I had a really bad last smooch of 2021 and Sal was like, "you can't have that as your last kiss this year".
Sally McMullen
Literally, I laid myself down on the sword and I was like,
Alex Hourigan
Yeah, you really didn't want to.
Sally McMullen
It was a real sacrifice.
Alex Hourigan
You poor thing.
Sally McMullen
That was my idea. But yeah, it was very, it was very fun. But we did return with le spicy cough. Also very on brand for us to get COVID at the same time.
Alex Hourigan
Oh, fully. We knew that was gonna happen but it was like, three days after New Year's, and we're like, "I don't think this is a hangover anymore".
Sally McMullen
Totally.
Alex Hourigan
If you're new here, we always like to share our life lesson of the week. Do you want to start?
Sally McMullen
Yeah, sure. So, as Al mentioned, we did catch the spicy cough over the break and spent the first week, you know, kind of just on the couch, feeling a little bit sorry for myself. Had all these, like, grand dreams of how I was gonna spend the break and it just didn't really happen. But we did go to Caves Beach. I went to Hunter Valley last weekend? Yeah, for a wedding. And we're going to Melbourne. So my life lesson is, in 2022, pack in as many adventures as you can.
Alex Hourigan
And we're go to Hawaii!
Sally McMullen
Yes! We booked a spontaneous trip to Hawaii. So we're going to live our Lilo and Stitch slash Blue Crush fantasy. I'm going to try to do, like, maybe 10 new places in the year. What's your life lesson, Al?
Alex Hourigan
Okay, my life lesson is, as Sal knows, I'm very like, "I'm going to do this, this week", and I will like give myself a lot of goals because I just want to be happy. I was listening to another podcast, it's Alexis Predez, her podcast anyway, basically, she was saying how you can actually achieve multiple goals by setting one. And so, what I've started doing is waking up at 7am in the morning. I know that's not that early for a lot of people, for me, it is and basically I get like three of my goals done just by waking up at seven. So I go for my morning walk, I do like, my journaling and then I make a breakfast and it's like because I'm waking up that period earlier, I've got nothing else to do and I'm not sitting on my phone as well, so it's just like by setting one goal you can achieve many.
Sally McMullen
I love that! So you're not like, okay tomorrow I have to do: get up and go for my walk, make sure I get up by this time, do this, do that. You're just setting one goal and then all the others kind of just fall into place.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah. So if there's something that, or there's like a couple things that you want to do, figure out the one goal that you can do that will achieve many.
Sally McMullen
The lazy girls guide to getting your goals!
Alex Hourigan
Last week was Valentine's Day.
Sally McMullen
Love is in the air!
Alex Hourigan
Dun dun dun!
Sally McMullen
We've got very different opinions on Valentine's Day, obviously.
Alex Hourigan
It's kind of inspired us to chat about being your own love interest. Whether you are spending Valentine's Day with your gals, your partner, whatever. And even if you are in a relationship, romanticising your life is fabulous. Romanticising your life allows you to embrace changes, learn new things and grow more into yourself.
Sally McMullen
Alright, let's get into it. What's your first tip?
Alex Hourigan
Okay, so my first tip is similar to kind of like my life lesson. So following on from that, is setting goals for yourself but understanding what your goals are and what they mean. Are they career goals? Are they finance goals? Are they kind of self growth goals? And making sure there's a balance within them. I think I've always prioritised kind of one thing in my life more than others and there's just not a lot of balance there. Like, I'll be like, I want to be, you know, earning this salary, and I'm gonna do 500 things, and they're all really big goals. Like, set yourself goals and understand, kind of the limit to them, and understand what you want to achieve and why you want to achieve them not because you think there's, like, societal pressure in it. And then there's also two different types of goals that you can set. So there's lifestyle changes, they actually are going to be a goal for life, which is another thing that I want on this Alexis podcast, these kinds of goals are ones that you need to find something that it's not, like, a one stop shop. So, if you're trying to lose weight for a wedding, like, that's not going to work, because you're just going to, maybe you will lose weight for your wedding, but then that's done and that's no longer going to be your life continuously. So you need to understand your goals, and make sure that they're goals for you.
Sally McMullen
Yeah, so instead of being like, I want to lose weight for this wedding, be like, I want to go to the gym three times a week, and cook my own meals at home five nights a week. Because that's something that you can sustain.
Alex Hourigan
And like focusing on the feeling of it afterwards. Like, I don't like waking up at 7am in the morning, I would much rather close my blinds and keep sleeping. It's a good time. But I like how I feel once I've done my, you know, my walk and all of that stuff. It's just a good energy. So, kind of chasing the feeling and getting addicted to the feeling after achieving your goals, rather than focusing on, like, the pain of doing it.
Sally McMullen
Yeah, totally. Alright, my tip for romanticising your own life is: take yourself on a date.
Alex Hourigan
Woo!
Sally McMullen
What I mean is, you know, go to the movies solo, a museum, go get your nails done. Just do something for yourself, on your own. Because I don't know if you're like this, but sometimes I'm like, "Oh, well, if I don't have anybody to go with, I just won't go". So I've missed out on, like, so many fun opportunities like gigs or exhibitions or whatever it may be, because I was like, "Oh, well, nobody's free" or nobody wants to go. And a lot of the time you have a better time on your own. Because you can kind of, whatever it is, you can do exactly what you want. Go at your own pace and really like soak it in, not have to worry about what the other person wants or is thinking or like, we always feel like we have to entertain whoever we're with.
Alex Hourigan
Showtime!
Sally McMullen
Literally. So, yeah, I actually learnt that because, when I do gig reviews, a lot of the time I have to go alone and for the first, like, however many, I was so nervous and felt like "oh, I'm gonna be the only person who's here alone", like, people are gonna be like, "Who's that loser?" But nobody cares.
Alex Hourigan
Nobody cares!
Sally McMullen
Nobody cares what you're doing. Nobody's watching and yeah, I would end up having the best time because I literally could dance like nobody's watching and, you know, like,
Alex Hourigan
Is that your favourite date to take yourself on? A gig?
Sally McMullen
Absolutely, going to a gig. So, 2022, you hear me? I need this.
Alex Hourigan
I'm coming for you. I remember when we were at Frankie's once and, it's like this rock and roll bar in Sydney, it's like an underground dive bar for those who don't know. Sal's, like, in the middle of the dance floor living here like Whitesnake music video fantasy and I was like, "Anyway, like, can we go like I'm pretty tired", and Sal was like, "Okay, like, see ya". And I was like, "It's only you and me here", and she was like, "I'm staying".
Sally McMullen
I was like, I know, I was like, I've got a queue of songs lined up, the choreo is ready to go. And I had the best time.
Alex Hourigan
I love that. I think I like the taking myself, like, down to the beach with like, a book and like, one time I went down to like Rose Bay Beach, I took like a little bottle of wine and just, like, sat and read a book. Then I drank a little bit too much wine that the book wasn't making too much sense anymore. But then also like going for like a massage or something.
Sally McMullen
Yes, get your nails done, do something for yourself.
Alex Hourigan
Little self care. Self love.
Sally McMullen
That's how you can be the main character, by learning to enjoy your own time.
Alex Hourigan
Okay, my next one of romanticising your life is to create your dream routine. So it's kind of like what you were saying of spending time by yourself. But spending time by yourself is not scrolling on TikTok for two hours, sending multiple memes to your best friend.
Sally McMullen
Shit, it's not?
Alex Hourigan
I know we just read ourselves. But it's giving yourself a Sunday routine that you follow yourself around and do kind of your own little chores or maybe that's every morning you wake up, kind of like what I was saying, and you go for a walk, you do a stretch and you make your breakfast. It's not boring, like you think getting into a routine is like, you become a little bit of an ant and you just go through the motions, but it's not at all. Like it makes you so much more comfortable in yourself. You've got your little tote bag, you know you're walking around doing your grocery shopping, you're like "I'm gonna buy a mango", you know? Like it's just, dream routine and figure out what you want in that. You can change things every day as well, like it doesn't have to be the same thing, like some mornings you might want to go and do a yoga class or then you just want to go for a swim at the beach, like it's just spending time with yourself but creating that dream routine that sets you in the right headspace and gives you that main character en-er-gy.
Sally McMullen
Love it. Okay, my last one is clear out your space, because, you know, you can't have that main character energy when you've got a bunch of clutter and old shit around your apartment. Al and I both did a Glebe Market stall earlier this year and completely gutted our wardrobes, looked through everything, if I haven't worn it in the last 12 months, if it doesn't fit me, if it's just not the vibe, it's gone. I had stuff in there that I'd literally bought maybe seven years ago and hadn't worn in about five years. Like it was pathetic.
Alex Hourigan
Spring cleans don't always just have to be in Spring.
Sally McMullen
Exactly. And I feel like a lot of the time you just feel like you're holding on to old memories, you feel cluttered, you know, you don't know where things are. And then after we did that Glebe Market stall, I went through and just reorganised everything and I have felt so fresh,
Alex Hourigan
Lighter.
Sally McMullen
Yes, literally. Like I just, I think I had this weight on my shoulders, not even knowing, just thinking about all the stuff that I had that I wasn't using. And we sold a bunch of stuff, donated a bunch of stuff and now it's living off its best life.
Alex Hourigan
Hot chicks have clean rooms.
As two shopping journalists, Sal and I try a lot of products and we love it, but we thought we would end the episodes each week with a product recommendation of something we've tried. These are not sponsored, you know, we may have been gifted some of these products and we didn't pay for them, but our opinions are our opinions and I don't know if you guys know this but we're kind of opinionated.
Sally McMullen
Shock!
Alex Hourigan
Spoiler! So, these are our product recommendations for this week. My one for this week is the Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Foundation. If you follow us on Instagram @twobrokechicks, you would have seen it was our beauty products highlight for one of our weeks a couple of weeks back. This is the most beautiful foundation I've ever used in my entire life.
Sally McMullen
I stand by it. It is so good.
Alex Hourigan
I'm beautiful when I'm wearing it, like, my skin does not look like my skin. This foundation has now bought, contracted and owns the term 'your skin but better'. It's $65 from Mecca, and if you want, you can grab a sample of it to see if it works for your skin. We've got a full review. Just go buy it. I can't even speak about it enough.
Sally McMullen
It's literally like an Instagram filter for your face. It is so gorgeous. I bought it as well and I absolutely plus one that recommendation. My one is, I recently got some new sheets from Bed Threads, they're the French flax linen sheets. I got them on Boxing Day and they're $320 because I have a big king size bed, you know, my princess and the pea bed, but I did get them on like a pretty big discount on Boxing Day. And oh my god, they are just heaven.
Alex Hourigan
Heavenly.
Sally McMullen
If there is one thing that I am willing to fork out the cash for, it is bedding of any kind.
Alex Hourigan
It's so good.
Sally McMullen
Especially during summer because their linen is super lightweight, so that has just been perfect. And the more you wash them, the more like buttery they feel. So, just treat yourself to some good sheets, but I absolutely do recommend these ones. I've also bought the Sheet Society sheets in the past and they're really good too.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah, spend some money on a good pair of sheets, you won't regret it.
Alrighty, chicky chooks. That's a wrap for our first ep. Thank you so much for joining us. Our episode next week will be with Ashton Wood and Cartia Mallan from the Common Chaos podcast. We'll be chatting all things friendships, relationships, and toxic relationships, all about making quality connections. And we'll have our bonus episode of Add to Cart where we talk beauty essentials, shopping tips and must have items for your wardrobe.
Sally McMullen
It's going to be so fun
Alex Hourigan
It's gonna be hot! Thank you so much for having us in your ear holes chicky chooks and thank you so much to our producer, Pariya Taherzadeh and Bamby Media for editing this beautiful, stunning, amazing, brave, funny episode.
