Are there any exemptions for travelling to Japan?There are strong restrictions currently in place for Australians travelling to Japan. At this point in time, permitted visitors from Australia are only allowed to enter Japan in the following situations:
- You have a valid Japanese residence card (e.g. citizenship or permanent resident)
- You have a re-entry permit
Can I travel to Japan if I'm a permanent resident or citizen?
Yes, if you're Australian and a permanent resident or citizen of Japan, you are allowed to return to your home.
Like any traveller entering the country, those coming from Australia will be subject to the latest quarantine and COVID test rules.
What are the entry requirements for Japan coming from Australia?
Do I need a permit to enter Japan?With less than a handful of exceptions being made for Aussies entering Japan, there currently isn’t a permit that travellers can apply for that is COVID-19 specific – standard visa requirements apply.
Do I need proof I've had a vaccine to travel?No, at this point in time Australian travellers don’t need to show proof of vaccination to enter Japan.
Do I need proof I've had a negative test before departing for Japan?Yes, all Australians need to provide a negative COVID-19 (PCR) test result taken within 72 hours of arrival in Japan. Travellers from Australia need to fill out the Certificate of Testing for COVID-19 Form prior to travel and might be retested when they arrive.
Do I need to quarantine when I arrive in Japan?All permitted travellers from Australia need to quarantine for 14 days. Australians who are permitted entry into Japan need to submit a Written Pledge and install a video app that has access to your location – Japanese government officials will use this application to contact you daily via video call to confirm your location and health.
Australian visitors who don't have a phone will be made to rent one and Japanese officials will visit in person if you are uncontactable for more than three days. Travellers from Australia are not to use public transport upon arrival in Japan.
