How does Travel with Jane compare to the competition?

Travel with Jane is making waves by offering a 16.2% discount for women, reflecting the gender pay gap. It’s a tempting offer, but how good is the cover?

To put it to the test, we’ve pitted Travel with Jane's high-level Luxe policy head to head against 1st For Women’s comprehensive cover. 1st for Women was originally a vehicle insurer offering lower premiums for women to reflect the statistically lower chance of car accidents, now providing travel insurance.

Both brands have deferent underwriters, making it a competitive match up. Overall, both are fairly typical travel insurance policies and can deliver capable cover regardless of gender.

The costs compared

On the whole, Travel with Jane offers decent all around cover and value for money. The discount could put them ahead of the pack but the policies have some exclusions and caveats that may not work for you.

By contrast, 1st For Women offers a wider range of policies. Travel with Jane's high-level Luxe policy more closely resembles 1st For Women's mid-level cover and it’s not necessarily fair to compare only the highest levels of each for cost, so we threw the 1st For Women mid-level "Essential" policy into the mix.

These are the quoted prices for a 40-year-old travelling to the US for a month on a $100 policy excess. As you can see, the mid-level policies carry very similar prices, while the comprehensive cover from 1st For Women is more expensive. With prices this close, the 16.2% discount can make a significant difference.

The cover ($100 excess)Price for womenPrice for men
Travel with Jane Luxe Cover$139.91$166.95
1st For Women Comprehensive cover$178.16$178.16
1st For Women mid-level cover$160.51$160.51

The discount is even more impactful when premiums are higher, such as when you opt for a $0 excess. The excess is the amount you’ll need to pay when making a claim (for most types of claim), so if you think you’re likely to have a claim, or simply want more peace of mind, it can be well worth ticking that box.

Remember, these prices are for a month long trip and you're going from a $100 excess to a $0 excess. If you have to make even a single claim it will more than pay for itself.

The cover ($0 excess)Price for womenPrice for men
Travel with Jane Luxe Cover$160.95$192.07
1st For Women Comprehensive cover$222.69$222.69
1st For Women mid-level cover$200.63$200.63
