Travel insurance brands react to Brussels bombing.

Global travel is still feeling the shockwaves two days after twin blasts rocked Zaventem airport and the Maelbeek metro station in Brussels.

The attacks left at least 31 people dead with over 200 others injured.

Passenger flights both entering and exiting the country were cancelled following the attacks. Zaventem Airport will remain closed on Thursday 24 March 2016 and Friday 25 March 2016.

Since the attacks, Australian travel insurance brands have begun offering statements about what their policies cover.

  • Emergency accommodation if your trip has been interrupted due to a terrorist act.

  • There is no cover for cancellation or amendment due to an act of terrorism

  • Disruption experienced pre-departure

For Single Trip and Multi Trip policies purchased after 17:00 22 March 2016 :

  • It is not possible to insure against known risks and the policy specifically excludes claims resulting from circumstances known at the time of policy purchase or trip booking and which could reasonably be expected to give rise to a claim.

  • Cancellation/rearrangement, travel delay and special events. Unfortunately, an act or threat of terrorism is excluded by the policy, as is a change of mind. If you wish to change your travel plans, contact your travel providers directly for assistance.

Attacks in Brussels

Belgium experienced more than 140 terrorist attacks between 1970 and 2014. The latest attack in Brussels, which left at least 31 people dead and another 270 injured, is its deadliest in recent memory. According to the Smart Global Terrorism Database, in the period between 1970 and 2014, those 140 attacks accounted for more than 40 deaths and 230 injuries.
