Heading overseas but not positive you'll actually be coming back on your initial return date? You're in luck. Many travel insurers allow you to extend your cover while you're overseas, provided you meet their conditions of cover extension. Most insurers will require you to give reasons for your extension of cover, generally in terms of any changes to your health or duty of disclosure. Cover will not be able to be extended straight away and will only extend once confirmation has been provided by the insurer with a new certificate of insurance.

What is required when I apply to extend my cover?

As can be seen above, most insurers will require:

  • You to submit your request for policy extension at least 7 days before your policy expiry date
  • Submit request either by email or by contacting a representative from the company

The insurer may request additional information around your reasons for policy extension prior to approving the cover including:

  • Reasons for you extending your policy
  • New date that you plan to return to Australia
  • Where you will be travelling to when you extend your policy
  • Whether you have any claims to submit from the original policy
  • Whether you have developed any new medical conditions during your initial period of travel

How do I actually extend my policy?

Most insurers will let you extend your policy by getting in touch via email, phone or online chat. There are some insurers that offer online extension options on their website.

What is the maximum period that I can extend my cover for?

  • This varies between insurers though generally you are not able to extend your single trip policy for more than 365 days (including the original travel period)
  • Annual policies can be extended to maximum trip duration for individual trips outlined on policy, usually 60 or 90 days

What is excluded when I extend my policy?

  • If you, your travel companion or family member suffers a medical condition or injury in the first period of travel, these conditions will be considered a pre-existing condition in the new (extended) period of insurance. You will not be eligible to claim for any losses related to these conditions
  • Some insurers will have a maximum age limit applied for when requests for cover extensions can be made i.e. 60 or 70 years old
  • There has been a change to your personal circumstances which may impact the insurer's decision of whether to provide you with cover

What if I am forced to extend my trip for reasons I can't control?

Most insurers will let you extend the period of insurance free of charge if you are forced to extend your travels for reasons outside of your control. Such events may include:

  • Luggage or personal effects have been delayed on the bus, airline, shipping line or rail authority you are travelling on
  • Delay is for a reason that can be claimed under policy (subject to insurer's written approval)

How much will it cost me to extend my travel insurance?

This will depend on:

  • The policy you choose
  • Where you are travelling to in your extended period of cover
  • Any events you are partaking in during the extended period
