French developer Nadeo has been working on its TrackMania series for over 14 years, which manages to merge the creativity of Minecraft with pure arcade racing.
There are two halves to the thrilling, over-the-top arcade racer TrackMania. The main play experience unfolds across three main modes – Campaign, Double Driver and Multiplayer. In the Campaign, you must compete for the best time across 200 tracks divided between four locations - Rollercoaster Lagoon, International Stadium, Canyon Grand Drift, and Valley Down & Dirty. Tracks can be circuit-based or A to B challenges, but each is quite short. What they lack in length, however, they make up for in density, with a focus on insane stunts, huge jumps and obstacles, all of which you need to handle while flying along at incredible speeds alongside other drivers.
The Double Driver mode is an intriguing co-op experience, where you and a friend control the same car and you have to work together to keep it pointed in the right direction – sure to be the source of much laughter. Multiplayer includes four-player local splitscreen, which is a fantastic feature not widely offered on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, as well as your classic online experience and a “beat your friends” leaderboards system similar to the Trials series. As you may have guessed, while the handling is fun and intuitive, it’s also not realistic. TrackMania Turbo is not a simulation and the laws of gravity are loosely applied.
The second half of TrackMania Turbo is the track editor, where you can indulge your creative streak by crafting a challenging and deadly stunt-filled track to test your friends and other online players. It’s a fantastic inclusion and mode for which the series is famous, and it effectively makes the game endless as there is always a new experience to enjoy. The track editor has evolved for this release, too, with the inclusion of a random track editor, and a dynamic soundscape system that sees the game adapt the music and sound effects to meet your track design.
