People like to travel at many different periods in their lives. For example, many younger people like to travel and see the world after leaving university, taking some time out to enjoy different parts of the world before they commit to the full time work that they will probably be tied to for decades to come.

Many others want to travel and explore the world once their working life is over and they reach retirement age, when they have plenty of time on their hands in order to enjoy exploring different countries. On top of this, of course, most of us love to be able to take an annual holiday, where we can jet off to pastures new for a week or two and sample other parts of the world.

No matter when you decide to travel, there are a number of tips that can help to make travelling more accessible, more viable and more affordable. Travelling to different parts of the world can be a hugely enriching experience but you need to put some thought into how to best manage and arrange your travels.

Five tips to help you to enjoy travelling and exploring

There are a number of tips that can help you to enjoy travelling and exploring different parts of the world. Some of these include:

  • Work out your budget: Whenever you are planning a trip to any part of the world, you need to work out your maximum budget and work out what you need to spend money on. For example, the basics that you will need to pay for are your flights and accommodation, but don't forget about other key areas, such as spending money, the cost of travel insurance, paying for food and drink, etc. Work out your overall budget for your trip and make sure that you keep enough aside for the extras such as spending money rather than blowing it all on the flights and accommodation and then finding that you have nothing left to actually enjoy and explore the destination you are travelling to
  • Do your research: When you are planning a trip it can really pay to do some thorough research when it comes to finding affordable flights, accommodation or package deals. The Internet is packed with great travel and holiday deals, so spend some time comparing a variety of different deals to find the most suitable and affordable one. You should look at the cost of the trip if you booked accommodation and flights separately as well as looking at booking a package – this way you can see which ones works out the most cost effective
  • Plan ahead to help cut costs: Some people who are travelling abroad splash their cash on four and five star hotels only to realise when they get to their destination that they spend very little time in their rooms because they are busy exploring. If you do not intend to spend much of your time at the hotel, consider paying less and opting for more basic accommodation and use the money you save to enjoy and explore the place you are visiting
  • Consider all-inclusive packages: If you are travelling to enjoy a well earned break and plan to kick back and relax at some resort destination, consider going all inclusive. Although the initial cost will be higher than if you booked self catering or bed & breakfast, you will end up saving a lot of money over the course of the holiday, as you will not have to pay for any food and drink whilst you are onsite at the resort. Sometimes, you will get some entertainment thrown in as well with all inclusive, which means even bigger savings
  • Plan out itineraries: Many people spend a lot of money on trips and excursions because they do not plan a proper itinerary and therefore end up paying money to go on impromptu trips whilst on holiday. If you do some thorough research into the destination you are travelling to, you can make up an itinerary of attractions and places of interest that are either very cheap or free to visit, which can save you money without you having to compromise on exploring the destination you are planning to visit

Find the right travel cover

One of the most crucial steps in preparing for any trip away is making sure you have the right travel cover in place. Every year, hundreds of travellers are left devastated after suffering losses while travelling and having to endure great financial hardship after not having the right travel cover in place.

Travel insurance can provide cover for overseas medical fees, loss and damage to luggage and high value items, rental car vehicle excess, trip cancellation fees and a whole range of other unforeseen events that can occur on your travels. Taking the time to compare different travel insurance options can ensure you find an affordable policy that still offers the right level of protection for your trip.

warning Finally, some good news! Domestic travel is picking up, so some insurers have started offering cover again 🦘
Just remember, you won't be covered for any pandemic related claims if you do take out domestic travel insurance.
International travel insurance is limited and sometimes unavailable at this point.
