Today is the last day to nab a free Gear VR for your Galaxy S8

Alex Kidman 27 April 2017 NEWS

Pre-order now to score the early adopter freebie.

Samsung’s pre-order special for the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8+ is essentially identical to the deals it offered for last year’s Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, in that early pre-orders can score a Gear VR headset to go with their shiny new phone. Samsung is also providing a $50 Oculus gift voucher to go with pre-orders so that you’ll have some VR content to go with your new headset.

The Gear VR headset that will ship with Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ pre-orders is the new version that comes with a motion remote; while we’re still waiting to do an indepth review, our early impressions are that the remote adds a lot to emergent gameplay and experiences with the headset, and the combination with the power of the Galaxy S8 and its Quad HD screen is quite compelling. Not quite an HTC Vive or Oculus Rift experience, to be clear, but it’s operating at a fraction of the cost.

Samsung’s deal for the free Gear VR with pre-orders expires today at 11:59pm, so if you’re keen, you’ll need to act fast. Samsung is selling the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ through its Australian Web store for $1199 and $1349 respectively.

If you don’t have that kind of cash to hand, the Gear VR deal also applies to phones pre-ordered through Samsung’s carrier partners, including Telstra, Virgin Mobile, Woolworths Mobile, Optus and Vodafone. Sign up to a contract before midnight, and the Gear VR bonus offer will apply, although there may be some delay in shipping out the actual Gear VR units.

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ go on general sale from tomorrow, with Samsung Australia already claiming that pre-orders for the handsets have been their best ever for any Galaxy S series handsets.
