On sale from midday today for a limited time only.

Budget airline Tigerair has announced that it will finally be bridging the gap between Brisbane and the Whitsundays with direct flights between the two destinations starting today.

To celebrate the new route, Tigerair in partnership with the Whitsunday Regional Council sent five families from the Whitsundays on a free trip to Brisbane this morning. For those of us who missed the boat, Tigerair is also discounting flights on the new route to $49 each way. These flights go on sale from 11am Queensland time today (or 12pm AEDT) and are available until sold out.

Following the sale, regular fares between the two destinations will jump to $79 each way.

Return flights on the Brisbane-Whitsundays route will operate four times per week on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays using the new A320 aircraft.

While the inaugural flight today departed Brisbane at 7:30am and arrived in the Whitsundays by 9:10am, regular flights will depart from Brisbane at 7.05am and land in the Whitsundays by 8:50am. Return flights depart the Whitsundays at 9:20am on the same days.

"The Sunshine State is an integral part of our network, with over 50% of all Tigerair domestic services touching Queensland," Tigerair's head of communications Vanessa Regan has said of the new route. "The new services between Brisbane and the Whitsunday Coast adds to this, delivering almost 80,000 additional visitors to both airports annually and providing a further welcome boost for Queensland tourism and the economy."

Brisbane is only the second city from which you can fly direct to the Whitsundays with Tigerair, with the other being Sydney.

Tigerair is also scheduled to open up a new direct route between Perth and Brisbane from 1 June 2017. When this route is launched, the airline will offer four return services per week, with the potential of six return services per week during peak periods.

The $49 flights have sold out however you can still browse for flights on this route through Flight Centre.
