This year’s Jetstar birthday sale brings back return-for-free flights
Celebrate with half-price fares on domestic and international flights.
Jetstar turns a mighty 14 years old this year, and true to form, it's celebrating with a sale.
Similar to last year's affair, it features return-for-free flights across some of its most popular domestic as well as international routes. Think Sydney to Melbourne from $49, Cairns to Tokyo from $289, Melbourne to Honolulu from $339 and Melbourne to Phuket from $289.
And yes, these are all return fares.
If you haven't come across a return-for-free sale, here's a short explanation. Basically, you purchase a one-way flight and your return leg is free. Gratis. Nix. The free return dates are usually quite limited, so you'll have to keep an eye out for flights priced $0 when booking to make the most of it, but rest assured, they do exist.
In this year's sale, the number of seats available per route range from 350-1,000 and eligible travel dates range from October 2018 to March 2019, excluding the Christmas break.
The sale was first opened to Club Jetstar members yesterday (30 April) and has now been opened up to the public with whatever seats haven't been snapped up already.
You can book the flights now through Skyscanner until midnight 2 May, unless seats sell out earlier.
UPDATE: Seats are selling quickly (as to be expected) but there are still some $0 seats running around. If you want to snatch them up we suggest you stay flexible with your dates and routes.

How good are these fares?
This sale mirrors last year's birthday celebrations in that it's offering a return-for-free deal. The starting price unfortunately has been brought up from $39 to $49; however, these are on different routes with last year's $39 flights available for Melbourne to Hobart journeys.
That being said, looking at like-for-like flights, it's a bit of a mixed bag in terms of whether you're getting a better price. Flights between Sydney to Melbourne are the same as last year at $49 return while flights between Melbourne and Hobart are now up to $71 return ($39 last year).
Whichever way you look at it, return-for-free sales like these don't come around often and are still a bargain compared to buying outside of the sale.
