Which consoles have sold the most over the course of video game history?
23 December 2015: Over the course of eight generations, major manufacturers like Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo and Sega have fought the console wars.
There's more than just bragging rights up for grabs when it comes to selling the most amount of game units in your console generation. The number of console units installed in consumer homes is referred to as an install base. The bigger your install base, the more attractive you are to third-party developers.
If you can open up a large gap in install base between your machine and your competitors, then you will receive the lion’s share of new game releases, more exclusive partnerships and, in general, better optimised games. This, in turn, drives more sales which can expand that gap even further.
With that in mind, here is a look at the current top 25 of all time, updated as of 23/12/15. We will update this page regularly, so be sure to check back regularly to see how things have changed.
