Why The Silk Robe is the latest brand that should be on your radar
The luxury loungewear label is all about encouraging you to take time off and chill - a mantra we can definitely get behind.
It's been a long day. You were up early, had back-to-back meetings and then had to go grocery shopping. Maybe you even had to pick up the kids from school. Once home, you had to cook dinner, fold the laundry and do the dishes.
But now the dishes are done. It's 9pm and you finally have an hour or two to yourself. You finally get to enjoy a glass of wine or watch Netflix. So what do you do? You go and change into your oldest T-shirt and a pair of worn-in tracksuit pants.
We spend hundreds of dollars on uncomfortably-tight party dresses that we only wear once and have loads of pairs of painful heels, but most of us don't have dedicated chill-out clothes – just worn out tees that might be ready for the bin. We know that taking time out to relax is important for our overall wellbeing, and yet, we don't invest in making ourselves feel comfortable or luxurious.
Enter The Silk Robe. This new label is looking to combat the idea of worn-out, daggy loungewear. In a world with new labels launching every day, promising more flattering cuts and wearable workwear as well as body-inclusive and Instagram-friendly styles, The Silk Robe stands out. It's a brand more worried about how you feel when you switch off, instead of a brand that encourages you to always be on.
This boutique label creates luxury loungewear –100% sandwash silk, light, feathery, flattering and totally comfy loungewear. The range is small but considered, offering camis, cap-sleeved tops, dresses and jogger-style pants that come in a range of neutral tones and on-trend colours of the moment like chartreuse and merlot.
The brand offers a considered capsule collection, with each piece designed to match the rest of the range. You can wear them together or pair them with pieces from your existing wardrobe. Most importantly, the range has been designed to make the wearer feel confident and happy no matter what they are doing, where they are or who they are with.
As I was browsing through the range, I felt inspired. Here is a brand offering me something unique and special to wear in my downtime. A brand trying to make self-care and switching off something to aspire to.
I don't think I'm alone in feeling a sense of guilt in putting down my phone or laptop. Sometimes it feels like if we're not responding to emails until we go to bed, working on a side-hustle, remembering birthdays, prepping meals or any of the other hundred tasks we all try to cram into one day, we're failing. How can we relax with our work and life admin piling up around us? But as I examined the effortlessly chic and yet totally comfortable black jogger pants, I felt inspired and empowered to take a night off. Like I might actually be doing the right thing.
Now I have to admit, I wasn't totally sold on the idea of silk loungewear when I was first introduced to the brand. Silk? So, I have to get it dry-cleaned every time I inevitably drop a tea-saturated Arno Shortbread biscuit all over myself? But founder Mimi LaMontagne has planned for chronic food-spillers like me. She's made all her pieces 100% machine washable. No trip to the dry cleaner needed. And I'm free to drop biscuit on my pants with abandon. Hooray.
Mimi is not your typical designer. She never attended design school. She never dreamed about fashion week. She just saw an overlooked gap in a crowded market. Speaking of her brand, Mimi LaMontagne says, "I woke up from an afternoon nap, ordered takeaway and cracked a bottle of red wine. I was wearing my ex-boyfriend's T-shirt while I did it, and realised that just wasn't good enough. To put it simply, that's how The Silk Robe began. I wanted to be comfortable in luxury, and now I want that for other women."
With their style-conscious aesthetic, these are pieces you won't mind running to the supermarket in if you've forgotten milk or even heading out to dinner in. At the same time, they have been designed so comfort comes first. But really, The Silk Robe is a brand with a powerful message at it's core – isn't it time we started prioritising our moments of relaxation?
