It's never too early to start counting down to Christmas, and now there's an even better reason to start as soon as five months out of the big day.

According to Skyscanner data released this month, August has come out on top as the cheapest time to book your Christmas flights.

Compared to last-minute bookings made in December, travellers can save up to 44% on their ticket prices if they book now. The biggest savings available are for travel to destinations like the Philippines, France and the USA.

Skyscanner analysed flight prices in 2018 to predict when is the best time to book flights, looking at departures made between 20 December 2019 and 1 January 2020.

Here are some of the routes that came out on top. Savings are based on average savings by booking in August vs December:

  • Perth to Manila – 44%
  • Sydney to New York – 40%
  • Sydney to Paris – 40%
  • Brisbane to Bangkok – 31%
  • Melbourne to Bangkok – 26%

And on the contrary, there are some routes that the flight comparison site found don't change much price-wise whether they're booked in August or last-minute in December.

The routes that Skyscanner saw no major price differences whether booked in August or December:

  • Perth to Auckland
