Menstrual Hygiene Day: How The Body Shop is changing the conversation
Because it's about bloody time we educated Australian school children about sustainable period options.
Each year on 28 May, World Menstrual Hygiene Day helps to put a spotlight on the issues experienced by menstruating persons around the globe.
In addition to acknowledging the lack of access many people experience when it comes to period products, the day also seeks to increase education and break down negative social norms surrounding menstrual hygiene.
How is The Body Shop helping?
In a bid to increase awareness around sustainable period options, cruelty-free beauty store The Body Shop has now joined the conversation and teamed up with The Sustainable Period Project organisation.
Together, the duo have released both a Period Pouch and an "It's Bloody Natural" Tote Bag that are available to shop now both in-store and online at The Body Shop.
From now until 30 June, The Body Shop will donate $5 from every purchase of the products to The Sustainable Period Project to help provide free, sustainable period education resource kits for Australian primary schools.
The kits will include samples of biodegradable pads, a menstrual cup, a pair of Modibodi period underwear, a reusable cloth pad, a USB with presentations, quizzes and activities, and an information booklet about menstruation.
According to The Body Shop, most people will continue to use the same sanitary product they were introduced to in early puberty, with "the average menstruating person [using] over 11,000 disposable period products in their lifetime."
The sustainable period kits will meanwhile empower young Australians to make menstrual hygiene choices that will benefit the environment, while also saving them money in the long run.
