The Block recap: The judges terrace a new one (23.10.2016)
Final room reveals saw the contestants sprinting toward the finish, but their renovation odyssey isn't over yet.
It was final room reveals last night on The Block, and everyone was getting a bit sentimental. Even the normally-composed Julia, a pillar of emotional strength throughout the season, finally cracked and had a cry.
But would the tears continue when it came time for judging? Shaynna, Neale and Darren showed up to give the contestants something to cry about.
First up were Karlie and Will, whose bigger terrace area gave them a distinct advantage. The judges loved the couple’s deck and courtyard, with Neale branding it “luscious and mature”, a description usually reserved for over-50s dating websites. The judges were less impressed with Karlie and Will’s re-do room. While Shaynna said the couple’s redone living area had addressed the layout issues, Darren pointed out that their television remained in danger of imminent immolation.

Next up were Carleen and Dan, who were understandably exhausted after being forced to get by on just 14 hours of sleep per night. Nevertheless, they got high marks for their terrace, particularly the couple’s table with a built-in fireplace. But Shaynna did have some concerns about the bizarre choice to put a leather sofa outside. Carleen tried to defend the decision by arguing that the sofa had a protective coating, but unless that protective coating was a roof and walls, it’s probably not going to cut it. Shaynna seemed fairly unimpressed by the whole experience, which drew Carleen’s ire. Carleen accused Shaynna of being a middle aged woman picking on another middle aged woman. The boomers did get some encouragement on the re-do of their guest room, however.

Andy and Ben’s budget terrace was next to be judged, and their lack of funds shone through. Darren moved from calling the terrace a “man cave” to comparing it to a prison cell, while Neale said it needed a “dirty great ute” to complete the picture. About the best feedback the judges could muster about the boys’ terrace and re-do room was that they had managed to finish.

It was then on to Julia and Sasha’s, and after “assassinating” property stylist Julia with weeks of career-ending comments, the judges now all decided they wanted to hire her, gushing on and on about the styling of the terrace. Their effusive praise turned downright erotic when they surveyed the guest bedrooms, as they heaped frankly creepy compliments on the styling of a contestant who they previously insinuated had no sense of style. It was a bit like if Lee Harvey Oswald had proclaimed that he couldn’t wait to vote for Kennedy in ’64. The damage is done, folks.

Last to face judgment were Kim and Chris, whose careful budgeting was obvious in the extra cash they had to spend on their terrace and re-do rooms. Shaynna proclaimed that the couple’s terrace “knocks me out”, so with her unconscious it was left to Darren and Neale to finish the judging. The judges were equally impressed by Kim and Chris’ redone master bathroom.

As the scores were tallied, the boys' budget woes sank them to the bottom of the heap. Carleen managed to get in a particularly nasty dig at Shaynna. What was that about middle aged women criticising each other, Carleen?
|Kim & Chris||9.5||10||10||29.5/30|
|Julia & Sasha||10||9.5||10||29.5/30|
|Andy & Ben||6||6||5||17/30|
|Carleen & Dan||9||7.5||9||25.5/30|
|Karlie & Will||9||9||9||27/30|
With the judging complete, we were again met with a situation where mortal enemies get to spend a night away from the Block together. It’s as though the network had planned it this way.
Another twist got thrown at our contestants, with Scott Cam revealing that they would have a week to renovate another apartment from start to finish, and that the teams would all work together. So Karlie and Will working with Dan and Carleen? Julia and Sasha working with Kim and Chris? Dan and Carleen working with absolutely anyone? Stay tuned for next year when this apartment ends up in our weekly Safe as Houses column.
