The Block recap: The boomers you love to hate (10.10.16)
Carleen and Dan were on a quest to ratchet up their villainy last night.
If you were putting together a fantasy dream team of the most objectionable reality TV contestants in Australian television history, The Block’s Carleen and Dan would go in the draft somewhere between that guy on The Bachelor who picked the girl no-one liked and that other guy on The Bachelor who picked the girl no-one liked. In other words, high first rounders.
Their draft stock was on the rise last night, as the couple did everything possible to appear unlikeable. It started with having a whinge about nemeses’ Karlie and Will’s winning rooms. While the other contestants heaped praise on Karlie and Will’s hallway, powder room and laundry, reigning chumps Carleen and Dan felt it wasn’t up to their standard. Keen-eyed viewers will remember that this standard includes leaving walls unpainted.
Following the room inspections, the beloved boomers continued their quest to become cartoonish, moustache-twirling villains as Dan once again played the condescending male to Karlie, demanding access to their apartment so Dan and Carleen could get their plumbing sorted.

We were given a brief respite from the pair when Andy and Ben launched another bright idea to shore up their ailing funds. After losing spectacularly in table tennis to Foremen Keith and Dan, and subjecting all of us to ForeDan’s upper thighs, the boys decided they would challenge the foremen to see who could kick an AFL ball into a wheelie bin. Spoiler alert: No-one can. To save some time and actually get back to renovations on this renovation show, host Scott Cam suggested altering the bet to reward the first person to handball a goal. Andy was up to the challenge, leaving the boys with bragging rights and $500 added to their budget. Keith and Dan were forced to don the Chump Jackets, a familiar feel for Dan but a rather uncomfortable fit for Keith.

Back to Dan and Carleen’s general unpleasantness, and Dan argued against a move by Will to extend power tool time. Possibly because it will disturb the all-too-likely slumber plans for WA's finest slobs, should they again choose to sleep instead of finishing one of their rooms.
Conflict ratcheted up a notch when Dan and Carleen’s plumbing again caused issues for Karlie and Will, all of which the pair blamed on those entitled young whippersnappers.
On a positive note, Kim and Chris again won the McCafe quality award, and we won another bit of hamfisted product placement. Seriously, how much clumsier and obtrusive could the product placement be? I used to be merely ambivalent about McDonald’s and Suzuki’s, and now I want to travel back in time and stop them from even being invented. Money well spent, advertisers.
