The Block recap: Drawers are for the young (16.10.2016)
Hilarious hijinks were afoot, or rather a-boot, last night on The Block.
Chris decided to play Andy and Ben at their own game by pranking the boys. He filled Andy’s work boots with a foam filling agent, and then we all sat back to watch the hilarity unfold!
Except it didn’t. Andy chose a pair of trainers over his work boots, and remained blissfully unaware of Chris’ shenanigans.
What this prank needed was a little nudge. Foremen Keith and Dan, playing comedy wingmen, went to inspect the worksite and told Andy he needed to be wearing work boots. Cue wackiness!
Except, no. Andy instead reached for his other pair of work boots. But you can imagine how funny it would have been! Answer: Mildly.

That bit of tomfoolery out of the way, it was on to the kitchen reveals. The couples really struggled through the week, fighting tight deadlines and shrinking budgets.
Karlie and Will, who had taken a big risk in pushing noise restrictions to finish their polished concrete floors, were first up. The risk seemed to pay off, with the polished concrete leaving the judges floored.
Sorry. I’m very, very sorry.
Anyway, the judges were pleased with the kitchen, with Neale calling it the “nerve centre of the whole apartment” and Shaynna saying it combined with the living and dining rooms to create a great entertaining space. Neale did, however, feel that some of the shelving was “unresolved”. I’m not sure what that means. Perhaps it has yet to deal with the traumatic events of its childhood?

Next up were Carleen and Dan, who managed to finish their kitchen and unfinished rooms from last week, in spite of observing the strict 7PM bedtime of their self-made aged care facility. Neale felt their kitchen was “beautifully understated”, because no-one likes a mouthy kitchen. The one bit of fault the judges found was a lack of drawers. Neale argued it was because Dan and Carleen are baby boomers, and didn’t store things in drawers. No, back in Dan and Carleen’s day you didn’t have fancy new technology like drawers. You just tied all your belongings in a burlap sack and threw it into the river, and if it floated they burned you as a witch.

Next the judges were on to Andy and Ben’s apartment, who were currently paying their builder with hugs and subtle winks. The boys really needed a win. The judges liked the kitchen’s use of colour, and its balance of modern and art deco elements. They also liked the massive bench top and the butler’s pantry, which functioned as its own self-contained kitchen (yeah, who wants to have to look at their butler?). The judges deemed the kitchen the Block’s “party kitchen”.

The judges then headed upstairs to Julia and Sasha’s apartment, and were immediately besotted with the girls’ Gaggenau appliances. You could say they were left agog-genau.
Again, I’m really very, very sorry.
Darren called the kitchen restaurant quality, though Shaynna was a bit concerned about the size of the bench relative to the room’s oversized cooktop. She also took issue with the placement of the girls’ steam oven, which was set above eye level. Nothing like blindly reaching around for your muffins in a blast furnace of steam and poor design.

Finally, the judges turned their eyes to Kim and Chris’ kitchen. The judges all loved the use of timber and the bench top, but Shaynna was concerned the grain in the stone and the grain in the timber would cancel each other out, possibly causing the kitchen to wink out of existence and be replaced by a formless void. Overall, the judges seemed to like the kitchen, but weren’t as taken with it as with the other kitchens.

Finally came the moment of truth. Andy and Ben flipped a coin and decided to use their bonus point in a desperate attempt to grab some funds. While the bonus point did put the boys’ score at a very high 29, they had the misfortune of an unheard-of double perfect score for Carleen and Dan and Karlie and Will. Each team was given $10,000, and a night away from The Block to hate each other in entirely new surroundings.
|Contestants||Darren's score||Shaynna's score||Neale's score||Total score|
|Kim & Chris||8||8||8||24/30|
|Julia & Sasha||9.5||9||9.5||28/30|
|Andy & Ben||9.5||9.5||9||29/30 (including their bonus point)|
|Carleen & Dan||10||10||10||30/30|
|Karlie & Will||10||10||10||30/30|
Finally, we were left with a sombre note as Andy and Ben let it be known that they would have to cut their tradies loose because they were entirely out of money. This should build some real suspense as we wait to see if the boys will even be able to finish their renovation.
Just kidding. Their property is already listed for sale on Domain, and it’s done.
