The Block recap: A night of revelations (22.8.16)
A night full of big reveals sees the contestants face the judges for the first time.
Night two of the Block 2016 was all about reveals: the contestants revealed their pod renovations, the apartments were revealed and we saw what was in that mysterious vault.
Before they could reveal their finished pods the couples needed to put the finishing touches on them, and with more than one team tight on their budget this was a tough task. Kim and Chris ended up winning the 48-hour challenge and getting first pick of apartments despite some feedback from the judges saying their design choices seemed to be a retread of two years ago. But overall the judges were very impressed that they were able to present their room with the small budget and even smaller time.
With their win Kim and Chris had first pick of apartments, they opted for the top floor unit. Julia and Sasha took second, and were surprised by the judges’ feedback as they were quite unhappy with how their pod turned out. They chose another top floor apartment, so these two teams should have some killer views of the Melbourne skyline. Next up were baby boomers Carleen and Dan who took the wildcard and chose apartment two on the first floor with the added mystery of the vault. Young Geelong boys Andy and Ben went next and also opted for a first floor apartment with apartment four. This left Karlie and Will with apartment one on the ground floor, and Scott Cam announcing their first week’s challenge was the master ensuite.
With everyone going full steam ahead planning their main ensuite renovations Scott visited Carleen and Dan to hand over the keys to their wildcard surprise, and we were treated to a look inside the vault. Inside was a range of decor items that looked to be from the same era as the heritage listed building they were set to renovate. There were light fixtures, lamps, design pieces and mirrors for the couple to include in their apartment. Then the pair opened another safe to find the surprise of a sign reading -$40,000. Scott explained to the worried pair that the couple can either use the additional $40,000 during the reno, or they can keep it in the kitty to deduct from the reserve. Scott then directed Dan’s attention to a painting hanging on the wall, behind which the couple found another $3,000 to help them with their bathroom and plumbing needs.
Final scores and apartment picks

|Julia & Sasha||25/30||Apartment 4 top floor|
|Dan & Carlene||24/30||Apartment 2 first floor (The vault)|
