One team got a harsh wakeup call as their shoddy workmanship was brought to light.

It was onward and upward last night on The Block, as the contestants continued their work on the challenge apartment.

As everyone was getting on with their build, Foreman Keith came by to do his regular check and gave several of the contestants some bad news. There were waterproofing, plastering and firecheck problems in Carleen and Dan’s bathroom, as well as firecheck issues with Andy and Ben’s ensuite. The block episode 38 Dan and Carleen waterproofing problems

The bad news kept coming as Foreman Keith was joined by Foreman Dan to deliver the customary list of defects the contestants would have to fix before their properties went to auction. Kim and Chris had the fewest defects, but the biggest surprise was the phone book full of errors delivered to Dan and Carleen. Not only did the “experienced renovators” have the longest list of defects, but Keith and Foreman Dan wanted to have a personal chat with the couple because some of the defects seemed so glaring. With baths not set properly, basins not installed, missing taps, drains not properly attached and toilets that led nowhere, if I had bought one of Carleen and Dan’s renos I’d be getting someone in to check it quick smart before it crumbled around me. Surely even Perth residents need functional toilets?

Meanwhile, Kim continued her thankless task as treasurer by calling on the fellow Blockheads to deliver a progress report on how fast they had been wasting their funds. Carleen was well-prepared with documentation on her outflows, but Andy seemed to have no idea where he’d spent money or what he’d spent it on. Now we know why he and Ben blew through their budget so quickly. I hope he's not teaching maths to his primary school pupils. He should have followed Julia’s strategy of just making up figures out of thin air. In the end, it became clear to Kim why the other contestants had struggled so much with their budgets.

Luckily, the contestants were able to put money issues aside and let off some steam with dinner, drinks and some impromptu karaoke at Kim and Chris’ apartment. Well, some of the contestants, anyway. Julia and Sasha’s invitation must have gotten lost in the mail, as the couple were left to listen to the ruckus next door while trying to get some sleep. At least with all that noise there's less opportunity for them to yell at each other.
