The Block 2017 room reveal recap: History in the making?
It’s our last room reveal as two teams vie to make Block history.
We open this episode on all our contestants rejoicing that the series is drawing to an end, and rarely have we so strongly identified with them. As we approach tonight’s final room reveal (or “front of house reveal”, as it were) suspense hangs thick in the air. Will Ronnie and Georgia make Block history with a seventh room win, or will it be Josh and Elyse who take the record?
Or, you know, one of these other dummies. The show is apparently taking it as a fait accompli that one of the two teams will win. But no-one has told the other poor saps that they’re fighting over scraps, so they soldier on valiantly.
Everyone is putting the finishing touches on the front of their houses, including attaching specially designed nameplates. Everyone has put a lot of thought into naming their houses, except Sticks and Wombat whose house is destined to languish in anonymity. It’d be a real tragedy but for the fact that HOUSES ARE INANIMATE OBJECTS AND DON’T REQUIRE NAMES.
There’s a bit of time for levity as Foremen Keith and Dan cook up a backyard barbecue for the contestants, most of whom are so busy painting they can only shove cooked meat in their mouths as the sprint by. Ronnie and Georgia, however, are well ahead of schedule and are able to take time out for the saddest game of backyard cricket you’ve ever seen.
Just one more night of work separates our contestants from their destiny. As the teams feverishly prepare their houses for judging, a hen’s party wanders by Sticks and Wombat’s and the boys burn some valuable painting time on Wombat’s awkward efforts at flirtation.
"I poop in a bucket!"
As the sun rises, Scott Cam also appears at the eastern horizon and calls out the final tools down of the season. Our teams celebrate and hug as though they don’t burn with hatred for each other.
But before they can celebrate in earnest, we must find out which team will seal a historic seventh victory! Will it be Ronnie and Georgia, or their nemeses Josh and Elyse? Because those are the only two options!
We start our judging with one of the also-rans as Neale, Shaynna and Darren inspect Jason and Sarah’s house. Darren calls it “the sweetest little dream house,” which leaves us to wonder what his definition of a large house would be. Neale says the couple wisely avoided the temptation to make a statement. Of course, knowing Jason and Sarah if they had made a statement it probably would have been, “Zzzzzzzzzzzz”.
Jason and Sarah's
Next up is Hannah and Clint’s house. Shaynna loves the pink door that Clint so maligned. Darren loves the colour palette, and the fact that the two named their house after its builder. Neale, however, is unmoved. He notices a carriage light by the front door is slightly askew, and says it’s emblematic of the entire house. Ouch, Neale.
Hannah and Clint's
Now it’s on to Ronnie and Georgia’s, and the real competition can begin! This is the moment that decides whether they will take the Block record, or whether it will go to Josh and Elyse! It’s exciting! It’s suspenseful! It’s …
The couple’s stark black murder house with its insane Alice In Wonderland tiles does not impress. Neale says it was a mistake to try to make a statement. He prefers houses that know how to keep their damn mouths shut.
Ronnie and Georgia's
OK, so it all comes down to Josh and Elyse.
Standing in their way is the minor obstacle of Sticks and Wombat. The judges love the boys’ Australian native garden and the muted colour palette. Neale notices the house doesn’t have a name, but says it would have suited “hygge”. He just had to shove that down our throats one last time.
Sticks and Wombat's
Finally, it’s on to Josh and Elyse’s. Certainly this is where we see history made. It’s time for a historic seventh victory, forever cementing their status as The Block’s power team.
Not so much.
The judges basically hate the front of the couple’s house. Shaynna says the choice of plants in the garden don’t match the rest of the house. It might be time to remind her that much of the rest of the house is plant-free, making it difficult to match. Neale is incensed that the two have made the front of their California bungalow look like a California bungalow.
Josh and Elyse's
OK, so no seventh win for anyone. That was anticlimactic.
The scores are all tallied, and Sticks and Wombat grab the final victory. If that isn’t the biggest kick in the hygge …
