What’s the average starting weight on The Biggest Loser Australia?

TBL

We've analysed the data across 10 seasons of TBL. How have contestant starting weights changed over time?

The Biggest Loser returned to Australian TV screens this week for its 10th season, TBL: Families. That meant we got to see 16 overweight contestants forced to jump on the scales in public and disclose just how obese they are.

This year's heaviest starter is Johnee, who weighed in at 215.7kg. That's an enormous number, but not the biggest in the history of the show. That dubious honour goes to Kevin from Season 8 in 2013, who started off at 254.7kg. Three other contestants, all men, have also topped Johnee's number: Damien in 2011 (234.4kg), Ryan in 2012 (228.4kg) and Damien in 2007 (216.3kg).

That got us thinking: How has that pattern changed over time? We've crunched the numbers to identify the average and median weight for a starting contestant on The Biggest Loser, and find out which seasons had the heaviest contestants. Plus, we've put every single contestant into a sortable interactive table so you can see how they stack up.

TBL starting weights averages and medians

The table below shows the average and median weights and ages for contestants over the 10 seasons of The Biggest Loser Australia to date. We've also broken out separate data for males and females, since male contestants will typically be heavier anyway.

Average weight 142.4kg Median weight 136.4kg
Average age 32.5 Median age 31.0
Average weight (male) 158.2kg Median weight (male) 154.6kg
Average age (male) 34.0 Median age (male) 34.0
Average weight (female) 127.7kg Median weight (female) 121.9kg
Average age (female) 31.1 Median age (female) 28.0

As you'd expect, the median weights are lower than the average, and the female figures are lower than the males. Still, a median starting weight of 136.4kg confirms that everyone competing on The Biggest Loser is dangerously overweight.

Has that become worse over time? Here's the average and median weight across each of the 10 seasons:

Season Average starting
weight (kg)
Median starting
weight (kg)
1 (2006) 174.7 173.0
2 (2007) 140.7 136.4
3 (2008) 140.8 135.2
4 (2009) 134.2 134.1
5 (2010) 142.2 138.8
6 (2011) 137.6 132.0
7 (2012) 143.5 140.6
8 (2013) 138.9 131.8
9 (2014) 137.0 131.1
10 (2015) 145.0 137.9

Season 1 remains by far the heaviest season, with a median weight of 173kg. Season 1 had the smallest number of contestants of any season, so that may have skewed the numbers. Two other years have seen a heavier starting median than the current series: 2012 and 2010.

Every TBL contestant's starting weight

Some fast facts from this table:

  • Only five contestants have entered The Biggest Loser weighing under 100kg: Shannon in 2014, Teneale in 2010, Kirsten in 2013, Lisa in 2012 and Romi in 2010.
  • The heaviest contestants are Kevin in 2010, Damien in 2011, Ryan in 2012, Damien in 2007 and Johnee this year.
  • The youngest contestants ever are Todd (15) in 2013 and Caitlin (17) in 2014.
  • The oldest contestants ever are Bob (57) in 2009 for the males and Rosemary (54) in 2013 for the females.

      Hi Lonzo,

Thanks for leaving a question on finder.

You do not need to pay to join The Biggest Loser. Various auditions are held around the country where you will need to bring your personality and the desire to lose weight. You can wait for the announcement in the show itself on how and where to audition. You can also contact channel 10 for more information about the audition process.

      Cheers,
      Joel
