Telstra’s Smart Wi-Fi Booster aims to improve your home Wi-Fi

Telstra's Smart Wi-Fi Booster is designed to reach those tricky places other Wi-Fi routers just can't get to.
Wi-Fi is everywhere these days... almost. Its near ubiquity means that when you do hit a spot in your home or office where the Wi-Fi signal is weak, flaky or downright non-existent, it's notably exasperating.
There can be multiple causes for poor Wi-Fi reception, from the underlying technology of your router to other devices creating interference and even down to the construction of walls between your location and the router.
None of which you particularly want to alter or have to fuss with, which is why there's such a robust market in a range of Wi-Fi range extenders and boosters. Telstra has today launched its latest networking device, the Telstra Smart Wi-Fi Booster, pitched at that exact kind of user.
The Telstra Smart Wi-Fi Booster works with an existing home Wi-Fi network, using the same network name and providing an additional boost to your Wi-Fi wherever you are on your property.
Physically it's a small round device, not terribly dissimilar to some of the best wireless Qi chargers we've tested recently, and Telstra advises that up to four can be configured for the one Wi-Fi network. Devices on the network should seamlessly switch to the best available boosted signal no matter where you are.
While Wi-Fi is obviously its core selling point, it's also equipped with a single Gigabit Ethernet port for additional connectivity, depending on your needs. It supports 802.11b/g/n at 2.4GHz and 802.11ac at 5GHz natively, and works with Telstra's existing Home dashboard app for ease of setup.
Telstra is selling the Smart Wi-Fi Booster for $180 outright or on contract for $7.50 per month for customers taking up an eligible 24-month Telstra Broadband service. Either way, it's an exclusive for Telstra Broadband customers. If you're keen on a new router instead, we've recently updated our review guide for NBN routers, covering 26 models across all price points.
Telstra has also announced today a 30-day NBN guarantee for new customers, allowing easy exit from 12- or 24-month contracts to customers unhappy with Telstra's service within the first month.
