If you want a prepaid plan with wide coverage and long value expiry, Telstra's Prepaid Long Life plans may suit.

As the name suggests, the key value driver for Telstra's Long Life plans is the fact that your prepaid value lasts more than the standard 30 days. Use the selector below to find out more about each plan.

  • Plan info
    Telstra Long Life $100
    Plan type
    Cost per month
    Excess data
    800 min
    2-min Australian call cost
    Australian texts
    Text cost
    Additional plan information
    • Pay-as-you-go 365 days
    • All for use within Australia
    • 2 min standard national mobile call cost (incl. flagfall): $1.95
  • Roaming charges
  • International call rates

  • Bonus talk to Telstra customers.Higher value recharges give you bonus minutes for calling other Telstra mobiles.
  • Can't overspend Like any prepaid plan, you can only spend what you've already given Telstra upfront with Long Life, so you never have to face bill shock.

  • High costs. You get more time to spend your quota, but you'll be slugged more for each usage in return.
  • Longest expiries only apply to top tier. If you want a full year's expiry on your prepaid quota, you've got to spend a minimum of $70 each time. Some competing prepaid plans offer longer expiry at much lower rates.

Who this plan would suit

Telstra's coverage is still the widest in the country for 4G LTE services, so there's strong appeal in these plans for any regional phone users. Like most long expiry plans, Long Life is best suited if you only intermittently use your phone for calling or texting out, or data checking, but want a contact point that will remain active over a longer period.

      Hello Peter,

Thanks for contacting us in regards to your Telstra T69 mobile.

In order to have your issue addressed efficiently and accordingly, you may contact your service provider or the branded technical team for that mobile device to make sure they may be able to pin point the exact issue your handset is currently having.

I have just received an email from you saying that the credit on my mobile 0497207989 is about to expire on 3 Aug.
However, I checked that there are $140.00 credit still on my account which also states that I am $40.00 overdue ??

I know that in the past I was mislead to add money to my prepaid balance and as I only use the mobile for emergencies it seems grossly unfair that you should annul and take away my balance, and yet then ask for a further $40.00

Please can you reapply the balance to my prepaid.

    Many thanks,

      Hi Jon,

      Thanks for your comment.

Just to confirm, though, that you’ve come through to we are an Australian financial comparison website and general information service and we don’t represent Telstra.

As we do not have access to your account and transaction, you’d be best to contact Telstra directly and their customer service support would be happy to assist you.

I’m sorry, I couldn’t be of more help.

Just to be sure, with a 365 prepaid plan there are no monthly fees and the credit ($40 or $70) expires after 365 days?

      Brodie | July 20, 2016

      Hi Frugal,

There are not set monthly costs for long expiry prepaid plans. $70 recharges and up will last 365 days, $40 will last 180 days.

      Hi Frugal,

Woolworths Mobile operates off parts of Telstra’s 3G/4G network at all times.

I want to put a GPS tracker on my drone in case I lose it. It operates on phone and text messages, no data.
I’m looking for the cheapest long term {12 month} plan with no data, and very little use for phone and text.
    What do you suggest?

      Hi Geoff,

Any of the long expiry plans offered by the major telcos or MVNOs should suit your needs, as they’re all pretty much built around that limited-phone-text-data use case you’re thinking of. If your usage is particularly low, you could consider something like ALDIMobile’s Pay As You Go plans, which let you recharge very small amounts with a full 365 day expiry period:

im on long life is it only free talk to other telstra users

    • Staff
      Brodie | May 31, 2016

      Hi Tesa,

Calls to Telstra mobiles on Long Life plans are not necessarily free. With each recharge tier, you get an allotted amount of ” Bonus Telstra Talk”. These minutes are not deducted from your recharge amount, rather your pool of bonus talk minutes.

      With a $40 recharge, you get 50 bonus minutes, 100 minutes with a $50 or $70 recharge, and 200 minutes with a $100 recharge.

Why can’t I send International text on my $30 long life plan. I was able to send them but about a year ago they came up as sent but they were not received, still not able to send them.

      Brodie | May 18, 2016

      Hi Maggie,

There’s no reason at a plan level why you shouldn’t be able to send international texts. I would recommend contacting Telstra so they can take at look at your account.

A elderly friend who only needs a basic mobile for contactability and the occasional call has just purchased a mobile phone with a $30 180-day Long Life plan from a Telstra shop. Question: If she tops up with another $30 before the 180 day expiry time and say has $10 credit still left on the plan does she end up with only the $30 top amount in credit or does the $10 still remaining carryover to make the balance $40. Cheers, Col.

      Hi Colin,

If she tops up with $30 before the expiry date of her existing credit, the $10 will roll over, giving her $40 credit in total.
