There are even more ways to get your sport fix as Telstra readies to bundle the not-quite-Foxtel sports streaming service.
Kayo Sports has been slowly rolling out its multi-sport offering in Australia in recent weeks, having soft-launched first with a browser and Google Chromecast product before offering up a dedicated smartphone app.
Kayo Sports has now gone officially live and for the most part if you're a fan of sport that might make little difference to you. However, if you're in the market for a new mobile or broadband plan, it might make sense to hold off for just a little while, because Kayo Sports has indicated that Telstra will offer Kayo Sports bundles, as well as a dedicated app for Telstra TV. The Telstra TV app will be available for Kayo Sports subscribers from tomorrow.
There's no word as yet as to what those bundles will be, but we can take some educated guesses here, based on what Telstra already offers around its existing AFL, NRL and netball deals.
There, it's frequently just a "free" bundled extra across most plan tiers and it's entirely feasible that's what Telstra will offer to its customers at no additional cost. However, Kayo Sports' release states:
Telstra customers can add the service to their home or broadband package, and from tomorrow Telstra customers will be able to watch Kayo at home using a dedicated app on Telstra TV, or on the go via their mobile.
Which could well mean that all you'll be able to do is get billed for Kayo Sports through your existing Telstra account, rather than have it as a bonus freebie. We've reached out to Telstra for clarification and will update as soon as we know more.
It's not yet clear whether Telstra will offer unmetered data streaming for bundled Kayo Sports plans. Telstra customers who qualify for NRL, AFL or netball subscriptions do not currently incur data charges for use of those apps. Kayo is quite data-intensive so an unmetered streaming offer could be a huge deciding factor for sports fans on the go.
