If you're keen to work as an English language teacher and educate people around the world, an online TEFL course will help you get started.
Both native and non-native English speakers can take a TEFL course, but you'll need an advanced level of English or an IELTS score of at least 7. It also helps to have a passion for communicating and connecting with a whole range of nationalities and cultures.
To teach English at colleges or universities in Australia, you'll need a bachelor's degree (in any field) and a TEFL qualification, such as a Certificate IV in TESOL or the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA), as a minimum. These two courses will train you in the theory and practice necessary to teach non-native speakers in a classroom.
Otherwise, there are many growing opportunities to teach English online and in some cases you may not need a bachelor's degree to do this. A TEFL course, however, will give you a solid foundation in ESL teaching methodology that will enable you to provide a quality service.
The Certificate IV in TESOL is a qualification accredited by the Australian government and allows you to teach English to speakers of other languages in Australia, as well as some places overseas.
The CELTA will provide you with an internationally recognised qualification through Cambridge University which enables you to teach not only in Australia, but in most countries around the world.
You'll learn the unique and specific skills needed to teach English effectively to groups of non-native English speakers in your TEFL course.
A certificate level course such as the Certificate IV and the CELTA will teach you:
A diploma or postgraduate course will teach you:
A short introductory course in TEFL can range from one to four hours to complete. However, if you want a recognised qualification for the industry, you'll need to set aside around four to eight weeks to complete your training online.
If you're keen to get your CELTA qualification or Certificate IV in a short time, you can do an intensive course that will take four weeks.
A postgraduate qualification such as a master's will often take between one and two years of study.
As the world continues to connect with the expansion of digital media, so does the need for communication in English.
While COVID has affected the ESL industry somewhat, there are still job opportunities in the field. Many schools have either moved completely online or expanded their courses to include online training.
Schools such as Learnlight, DaDa or Cambly offer lessons to adults and children all over the world, and employ Australian teachers with qualifications.
Completing a TEFL course can either set a foundation for further study, if it's a short unaccredited course, or open up opportunities in the field of English language teaching.
Combined with your bachelor's degree in any field, a TEFL qualification will enable you to start teaching English to foreigners in language colleges in Australia or work for online schools. If you gain a master's degree in TESOL, you can teach English in universities.
Here are some possibilities that a Certificate IV in TESOL or a CELTA certification can offer:
