Crest 3D White Professional Effects

Crest 3D White Professional Effects kit. These teeth whitening strips can work to reduce stains that have been hanging around for as long as 14 years, according to its makers (the US firm Crest). Simply fix the small plastic strips on to your teeth and the whitening gel's bleaching agent will take care of the rest.

Price: $94.90 (For 40 strips – or 20 treatments)

  • Easy-to-use product
  • Billed as 'non-slip', in theory, these strips shouldn't cause much discomfort to wear
  • Owing to its concentrated strength, this product might not be suitable if you're prone to teeth sensitivity.
  • Uses disposable plastic strips – not a particularly green-friendly option.

Best if you have sensitive teeth: HiSmile

HiSmile. This teeth whitening kit solution uses Phthalimidoperoxycaproic acid (PAP) instead of more traditional whitening agents like hydrogen peroxide (which can cause discomfort if you have sensitive teeth). Helpfully, the clear instructions that come with the kit are easy to get to grips with.

Price: $89.99

  • The non-peroxide treatment may be better for those with sensitive teeth
  • Simple, user-friendly instructions
  • Refills are quite expensive

Best for convenience: CleverWhite Dissolving Whitening Strips

CleverWhite Dissolving Whitening Strips

These thin and transparent strips may deliver results within 10 minutes. A key USP with this product is that the strips will dissolve on your teeth. How's that for simplicity? Also, the fact that they're free from gluten will make it a go-to choice for some.

Price: $22.49 (for 42 strips)

  • Mess-free option
  • Inexpensive
  • Using 6% Hydrogen Peroxide, this product may also be unsuitable for those with sensitive teeth
  • We couldn't find any recent reviews online.

What kind of teeth whitening solutions are there?

Broadly there are two main types of teeth whitening solutions. These are as follows:

  • Professional procedures. These cosmetic treatments are usually delivered in-person at a dental practice. A strong bleaching solution is usually applied to the teeth and this gets activated by light, lazer or heat.
  • DIY kits, strips, gels and toothpastes. A range of products are available online or at a supermarket or chemists. These solutions need to be self-administered with care.

While you're shopping online, keep in mind that the legal limit in Australia for over-the-counter (OTC) products which contain hydrogen peroxide is 6%. So, only dentists can offer teeth whitening treatments that contain more than 6% hydrogen peroxide.

Frequently asked questions

Does smoking give you yellow teeth?

Yes, the staining of your teeth is just one of the negative effects of smoking. The yellowing is caused by tar and nicotine in cigarettes.

Do teeth whitening strips really work?

It depends on a number of factors – and there's no guarantee they'll work for you. Teeth whitening strips typically aren't effective on stains caused by antibiotics or dental restorations. On the other hand, some people find they are effective at removing surface stains and making their teeth look brighter.

Should I talk to my dentist before trying a teeth whitening solution?

Yes, it's best to speak with your dentist before you use any teeth whitening product. There are lots of dental problems that can prevent a person from being a good candidate for a kit. This could be anything from not having straight teeth to gum disease to untreated cavities, among a number of other issues.
