Sydney suburb sampler: new week, new suburb

Byron Matthews samples all the suburbs he’s ever wanted to call home.

Sydney’s suburbs each have their own particular personality, and each has its adamant defenders. It’s easy to become entrenched in one community, but have you ever wondered if the grass truly is greener?

Byron Matthews has decided to find out. After his landlord sold his apartment, Byron found himself adrift with several weeks between the end of his lease and an extended overseas trip. Rather than crash on a couch, Byron set out to sample all the suburbs he’d ever wanted to live in.

He set a few ground rules for the experiment. His stay in each suburb cannot cost more than a week’s rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city, or around $770. Also, he will use public transport or walk to work from each location, and will sample the dining and nightlife in each area.

Each week, we’ll bring you Byron’s suburb reviews as he works his way across Sydney.
