Based in the British Virgin Islands (no doubt due to data retention laws being notably absent), Surfshark is a relative newcomer to the VPN market. Without any features locked behind "premium" pricing tiers, it's a speedy, versatile online security solution with attractive rates.
What features does Surfshark offer?
One of the interesting things about Surfshark is that none of its features are restricted to a higher paid subscription tier. Everything is available on the same plan, at varying commitment lengths (with discounts for longer periods).
Notably, Surfshark allows customers to connect to their servers with as many devices as they want. This is a rare and possibly unique feature, but Surfshark warns against connecting multiple devices to the same server, as this may cause interference.

What is a VPN and how does it work?
A virtual private network (VPN) is an intelligent connectivity tool that has become popular recently due to increased concerns over security online. If you don't know what it is, don’t worry, we'll break it down.
Essentially, a VPN hides your computer or phone's Internet protocol (IP) address by routing it through another server's address. It’s basically a disguise for your device and is great for boosting your personal security, deterring tracking and accessing content that isn't generally available in your area.
Is using a VPN to access geographically-restricted content legal?
There are lots of legitimate uses for a VPN. The legality of using one to access region-locked content is a grey area. While you're probably not going to attract the attention of the Australian Government, you do risk having your VPN or streaming subscription banned or cancelled.
There is also the possibility that a copyright holder may want to take legal action if you're found to be watching certain content in an unlicensed area. However, the entire point of a VPN is that it masks your IP and prevents others from snooping on your online activities, so it may not be possible for a copyright holder to identify you if you do choose to access its content without the relevant licensing. At finder.com.au, we do not encourage online activity outside the law – we only compare the services available to Australians.
Is it illegal to use Surfshark?
No. Do some people use a VPN for illegal activity? Yes, but those people aren’t assured complete security if the activity breaches the VPN provider's terms and conditions.
Will Surfshark keep me safe from hackers?
That's the aim of most VPNs. Using a consumer VPN enables you to use the Internet anonymously, theoretically stopping hackers or similar threats. However, very few solutions are 100% secure, which is why it’s important to compare the quality of a VPN provider and the security it claims to offer.
Am I locked in with Surfshark when I sign up?
It depends on the package you choose. On a monthly basis, you'll only be committed for the month, but if you choose the other packages you'll be locked in for 6, 12 or 24 months.
