Super Mario Odyssey drops dino-sized new details

Matt Sayer 14 June 2017 NEWS

Mario is switching it up in style.

Nintendo's E3 Spotlight event gave us plenty of new details on Super Mario Odyssey, including a new trailer focusing on the just-revealed capture mechanic. Mario is able to throw his hat at a variety of objects in order to take them over, assuming control of animals, vehicles, and even enemies like Bullet Bills.

We also learned a bunch more details during Nintendo's post-show debrief, such as the ability for Mario to buy new items with coins for the first time. He'll also have a number of different hats to collect, including a sombrero and a top hat. Especially exciting is the inclusion of 2D Mario stages within the 3D levels. These take place on the walls and other surfaces of the 3D stages, much like in the 3DS game The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.

Super Mario Odyssey is set to launch on October 27 this year.

We'll be covering E3 all week. You can follow along with us by checking out our guide on how to watch all the E3 2017 live streams, or catch up on all the news and announcements from the show at our E3 2017 hub.

Super Mario Odyssey is one of over 150 titles to be shown off at E3 this week. If last year's trends continue, there's a 70% chance it'll see release before E3 2018.
