Beauty product of the week: Sun Bum Scalp & Hair Mist SPF 30
"I never thought I'd geek out over an SPF product, but here we are."
I think we all know by now that SPF is an absolute beauty essential in summer and all-year round. While I regularly lather my face and body with SPF 50+ products, I also regularly end up with a burnt scalp. Not only does it hurt like hell, it always peels and I look like I have gnarly dandruff within days. It's just not the vibe. That was until a friend told me about the Sun Bum Scalp & Hair Mist spray and, no hyperbole required, my life legit changed forever.
About the product
The Sun Bum Scalp & Hair Mist SPF 30 is a sunscreen spray that protects your noggin from UV rays. The SPF 30 product offers UVA/UVB broad spectrum protection and is water-resistant.
It has a lightweight and water-based consistency that's safe for coloured hair and suitable for all hair types. The mist is enriched with sea kelp and algae, which is nourishing for your hair.
For ultimate protection, make sure to reapply every 2 hours, or after 80 minutes if you've taken a dip or worked up a sweat.
You can pick it up for $20.99 at Priceline and Oz Hair and Beauty. Use the code FINDER5 for a cheeky 5% off.
The Sun Bum Scalp & Hair Mist is a no BS SPF product that's really easy to use. Hold the container around 4 to 6 inches from your skin and spray evenly along your part or exposed scalp at least 15 minutes before heading into the sun.
Although it's lightweight, I only needed 4–5 spritzes to get the job done. It's clear, dries within minutes and doesn't leave any visible residue. To my delight, it doesn't weigh down the hair or leave you looking greasy either.
My scalp usually burns within 30 minutes to an hour of being in the sun, but this baby worked wonders to protect me from nasty UV rays.
You can also use it on your face, but I'd recommend spraying it on your hands first and then rubbing it into your skin.
Just like any SPF, you'll get the best results if you reapply it throughout the day. The 59ml bottle is pretty compact, so it's convenient to chuck in your purse or beach bag to give yourself a quick spritz as you need.
While I'd love for it to smell like coconut or something similarly as summery, it kinda doesn't really smell like anything.
The final verdict
I never thought I'd geek out over an SPF, but here we are. I think I can divide my life's story into 2 parts: before the Sun Bum Scalp & Hair Mist and after.
It's lightweight, easy to use and doesn't leave your hair looking greasy. Like, how?! Most importantly, it delivers on its sun protection promise like any solid SPF should.
I would love if the brand brought out an SPF 50+ version, but in the meantime, this does the trick and protects my scalp from getting sizzled. This is an absolute sun-safety essential and I'll definitely be buying it again.
