Summer styling tips from Topshop’s personal shopper
Need some fashion-inspo to keep your look fresh this summer? Us too. So we called in an expert.
With the holiday period just around the corner, sometimes we're all too busy to piece together a killer outfit. Summer is a time of year where you want to look totally hot and effortlessly chic but somehow you always end up in the same pair of denim cut-offs. Well, we're here to help.
Thanks to the DVD & Digital release of The Wrong Girl, based on the ever glam Zoë Foster-Blake’s best-selling novel, we had the chance to chat with Topshop Bondi’s very own personal shopper, Mel Costalos. We quizzed her on how we can recreate the looks of the ever-stylish Lily Woodward (played by Australian sweetheart Jessica Marais) for summer and the party season.
Here's what Mel had to say:
When it comes to family gatherings, you can’t go wrong with a floral dress. If you’re not a floral kinda gal, think like Lily and opt for a floral peplum shirt paired with an A-line denim skirt or denim shorts for a more relaxed feel.
Summer at the beach
It’s all about the swimmers, hats, beach bags and sunnies! Add a tunic dress or overside buttoned shirt and a pair of strappy sandals to add some beach glam.
Lunch with the girlfriends
Throughout The Wrong Girl, Lily is a fashion powerhouse, playing with patterns, colours and fabrics. It seems basic, but a collared shirt can be styled in a range of creative and uber-chic ways. Mix up your standard white collared shirt for a printed piece with a hint of metallic. The holiday season is all about being fun and flirty; so don’t be afraid to pair your shirt with a pop of colour, like a scarf, hat or handbag. Finish off the look with a pair of patent black heels and cue the compliments.
New Year's Eve
New Year's Eve is the perfect occasion to be the star of the party. So don a metallic dress and get ready to shine bright. Metallic pieces are perfect for evening gatherings as they’re subtle and capture the light perfectly for memorable new year snaps. Keep it simple with your shoes like Lily, and chose a nude pump to compliment your overall look. If it’s a bit on the chilly side, Topshop have plenty of party picks to choose from – did someone say velvet blazer with embellishments?
Summer sporting events
Keep it casual in a pair of mum jeans with embroidering or a pair of cropped frayed straight leg jeans. Team it up with a fresh white sand shoe or studded chunky heel. Chic it up with a flute sleeve top tucked in- its light weight and perfect when in the sun.
Summer in the office
Culottes! Great on all shapes and sizes because of the A-line cut. Super soft fabric that is loose on the body so you are not too hot. Wear with flare sleeve blouse or off the shoulder peeking bardot tops!
Meeting the parents
The holiday season is filled with family get-togethers. Perhaps the most nerve-racking is meeting your partner’s parents for the first time. A pair of cropped black pants is a staple, not just at this time of year, but for life. When meeting the parents, simplistic pairings are guaranteed to keep you in the good books. Pair with a trusty collared button up and your favourite sweater for a preppy look that mirrors the sophisticated styling of Lily.
Romantic date at the Christmas markets
Stroll hand in hand with your partner in a tulle dress. Jazz it up with an overlay paired with a lace crop and light washed denim cropped jacket. Finish off the look with some pointy-toed glossy sling back heels.
