This week in streaming: A new class of superheroes and the return of The Walking Dead

From heavenly hook-ups to grisly murders, there's something for everyone this Valentine's Day week.

Love is in the air this week, and if you've given your heart to the seductive world of streaming TV, you're in for quite a treat.

Lycra-lovers will want to keep their Friday free for the debut of The Umbrella Academy on Netflix. Based on the comic book series penned by My Chemical Romance vocalist Gerard Way, the show follows a motley crew of superheroes under the tutelage of a rich and mysterious billionaire who is convinced his wards will be crucial in saving the world from an impending threat. Otherworldly doom isn't the only source of tension among the ersatz family, as their conflicting attitudes lead to plenty of drama and in-fighting that threaten to tear the group apart.

For folks after something a little more romantic, Stan has you covered with the premiere of the comedy series Miracle Workers. A disenfranchised God (played by the always-compelling Steve Buscemi) decides that it's time to hit the reset button on Earth and wipe humanity from existence. Two plucky angels (Daniel Radcliffe and Geraldine Viswanathan) convince God to give humanity another chance – but only if they can highlight its worth by helping two people fall in love. That's no small feat, even for a pair of heavenly beings.

While Stan is focused on averting the apocalypse, Foxtel is fully embracing the post-apocalyptic lifestyle this week with the return of the ninth season of The Walking Dead. Picking up right after the tumultuous events of episode eight, this latest batch of episodes will see The Whisperers enter the fray as a serious threat to the ongoing existence of Rick's fragile band of united survivors.

Not in the mood for the grim and gory? Maybe you'd rather spend this rose-wreathed week kicking back with your significant other and feasting upon the drama of those with more money than sense? If so, you'll want to set your digital dials to hayu this Wednesday for the premiere of the ninth season of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. It might not be the most stimulating of this week's options, but the shared incredulity for how the other half lives is sure to bring you and your loved one closer together.

Perhaps you want to explore the darker side of love this week? Amazon Prime Video has you well and truly covered with the debut of Lorena, a four-part docu-series that investigates the infamous case of Lorena Bobbitt, the woman charged with dismembering her husband's private parts as revenge for years of domestic and sexual abuse. Despite occurring way back in 1993, the case remains complex and fraught with bias and prejudice. Lorena, under the guidance of Joshua Rofe and Jordan Peele, aims to break down many of those prejudices and shed new light on the harrowing incident.

SBS On Demand closes out this week's streaming line-up with the premiere of McMafia. As the name suggests, the British crime series dives into the seedy underbelly of organised crime and centres on Alex Godman, the son of parents exiled from the Russian mafia who have moved to London to start their lives anew. Unfortunately, life is rarely that simple, and Godman's past reaches out a blood-stained hand to pull him back into a world of sin and corruption.
