This week in streaming: The Punisher returns and a new True Detective is born

Matt Sayer 14 January 2019 NEWS

It's 2019's biggest week for binge-watching yet.

Just as the world gets back into the swing of things for the new year, so too are Aussie streaming services spinning up their gears and rolling out the big guns in the battle for your binge time.

Netflix kicks things off with two heavy hitters that couldn't be more different from each other. On the family-friendly side, the reboot of Carmen Sandiego sees the plucky thief take on a less villainous role this time around, stealing only from the evil organisation V.I.L.E. and holding herself to a strict moral code. It's an intriguing twist for the popular 90s icon, and with Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin, Annihilation) providing the voice of Carmen, there's sure to be plenty of snarky humour.

For those with a taste for blood, Netflix is also bringing back The Punisher this week. As one of the few remaining Marvel series Netflix hasn't yet cancelled, The Punisher has a lot to live up to with its second season. In it, Frank Castle grapples with the prospect of forging a life unbound by vengeance. Having exacted revenge on those who destroyed his family in Season 1, Castle must decide what the future holds for him. Will he continue to let anger drive him, or will he walk a new path and truly earn the moniker of "hero"? You'll have to tune in on Friday to find out.

A very different dilemma unfolds over on Stan this week. In the BBC miniseries Ill Behaviour, a man named Charlie reacts to his cancer diagnosis by foregoing modern medicine in favour of natural alternatives. His friends think he's delusional and decide to kidnap him, taking him to a mansion they've turned into an impromptu hospital and forcing him into chemotherapy. Despite their good intentions, their plan rapidly devolves into comedic chaos, leading to absurd moments that inspire both laughter and reflection on the morbid nature of Charlie's illness.

The grim tone continues on Foxtel, where the critically-acclaimed True Detective returns for Season 3. Where the first two seasons emphasised their ensemble casts, Season 3 centres on a single detective (played by Mahershala Ali) tracking two children who have disappeared in the Arkansas Ozark mountain range. Like the first season, there are multiple timelines in play, encompassing the original investigation, its re-opening a decade later and its legacy as a cold case thirty years gone.

If all this murder and malady has you feeling down, you'll want to set your digital dials to Amazon Prime Video instead where the third season of The Grand Tour drifts across the starting line this week. The spiritual successor to Top Gear has big plans for its latest run including Colombian cliff-climbing by Richard Hammond (aka "The Hamster"), Lamborghini testing in Sweden and motorhome madness in Arizona.

Culinary connoisseurs will find the highlight of their week courtesy of SBS On Demand. The second season of the French drama series Chefs arrives in full this Thursday, plunging further into the intense world of professional French cuisine and the demands it has on the people behind the food.
