Cure that New Year's hangover with a fresh dose of binge-friendly TV and movies.

If you're struggling to come up with a New Year's resolution that you won't abandon three weeks into 2019, why not set yourself the goal of watching more new and varied entertainment? Aussie streaming services make this easy, with the first slate of fresh content for the new year providing plenty of opportunities to experience new and novel perspectives.

Netflix sets the tone for 2019 with the release of the third season of its popular fantasy show A Series of Unfortunate Events. Based on the last four books in the Lemony Snicket franchise, the third season sees the two young Baudelaire children continue to wage war against their dastardly uncle Olaf as they seek the truth of their parents' death and the future they intended for their children.

Over on Stan, the new year adopts a more familiar tone with the debut of the Australian-made original series Bloom. Led by Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) and Phoebe Tonkin (The Vampire Diaries), the mystery series centres on a small town one year after a powerful flood wrought death and destruction on the town's inhabitants. In the wake of that disaster, a strange plant begins to grow, one with the ability to grant a person eternal youth. As with all great discoveries, though, some residents don't want to share this newfound power, and will go to any lengths to ensure it remains a secret.

Speaking of secrets, Foxtel dives into the mysterious world of government experimentation this week with The Shape of Water. Directed by Guillermo del Toro, the mind behind Pan's Labyrinth and Pacific Rim, The Shape of Water explores an unlikely romance between a woman who cannot speak and a peculiar amphibious creature discovered in the depths of the Amazon River. The movie achieved critical and commercial success in its theatrical release, and encourages a more open-minded approach to the concept of love.

SBS On Demand closes out the first week of the year with something even more hard-hitting. Dopesick Nation sees two recovering drug addicts set out on a mission to help save others from the dangers of addiction. Set in southern Florida, the show also exposes many of the problems inherent in the rehabilitation industry, highlighting how some aspects and initiatives are designed to take advantage of recovering addicts rather than help them actually kick their habit.
